Dehart slowly closed his eyes before opening them again and walking toward the entrance of the tent.

Eli whispered “Stay strong” from behind before being struck by a small lightning bolt, quickly disappearing to tend to his duties.

Finally, Dehart found himself alone with Sebelia, free from anyone’s interference.

* * *

Sebelia looked around the inside of the tent. The sturdy support beams, wrapped in thick cloth and wood, formed a structure that could easily be called a home. Had he stayed quietly inside, he would have certainly been safe, untouched by the shock that had rattled the valley.

But he didn’t do that.

Sebelia released Alos’s remains into the air and gently placed the blue bird on a cushion. Moments later, Dehart followed her inside. The thick cloth shifted with the sound of movement, and his dull golden eyes fixed on her.

His firm lips twisted. He opened his mouth a few times, but ultimately couldn’t bring himself to call her name. Sebelia spoke up for him, taking the lead.

“Dehart.”

He nodded slightly.

“How did that wound happen?”

“……”

“What about the wound on your palm? And why is there dried blood on you?”

Dehart remained silent.

“You promised you wouldn’t take any risks. You promised you’d know your place, that you understood your role. But now look at this.”

Her icy eyes glared at him as she chastised him.

“I don’t know exactly what happened here, but if Alos shielded you and was reverse summoned, something serious must’ve happened. Something that threatened your life.”

“……”

“If I’d known this would happen, I would’ve never sent you. I wouldn’t have sent you after herbs for me.”

Dehart thought about how things had come to this. But no matter how hard he tried, all he could come up with were excuses. It had been unavoidable. It couldn’t have been helped.

Because those damn bastards had been trying to satisfy their own desires with her life on the line.

As that thought crossed his mind, Dehart felt his insides twist. His stomach burned with anger, and his eyes became hot. Hot breath escaped between his teeth, and his limbs tingled. The impulse to grab those bastards by the collar and throw them off the cliff surged to the top of his mind.

But he didn’t act on it. Even though he hadn’t known Sebelia was coming, he still didn’t do it. Because…

“This was the best I could do. I… I only did what I had to do.”

His voice was low and rough, almost as if he were chewing the words. Sebelia opened her eyes wide in response.

Dehart’s eyes briefly met hers and the small bird, a fleeting moment of emotion that could almost be mistaken for guilt.

But as he turned back to Sebelia, his face was the same as ever. Arrogant, selfish, intense, and unyielding.

“You’re dying out of my sight. That damn illness is eating you alive bit by bit, and here I am, stuck in this godforsaken place, handing money to these scum and begging for herbs to save you. Was that what I was supposed to do?”

His harsh voice grew louder, striking like lightning. Sebelia swallowed a sigh, trying to calm him, but it was no use.

“Dehart, just—”

“You’re dying, and I’m stuck here, pandering to those bastards. Ha!”

The venom in his voice was clear, and the beauty of his golden eyes seemed to shatter as poison seeped out from within.

“Days, I could’ve handled a day or two. But it’s been over ten! Ten long days of sitting here, suffocating, wondering if you collapsed today. I couldn’t relax for a single moment, not knowing if the medicine would lose its effect, or if I’d hear that you died overnight.”

His burning words dripped into Sebelia’s heart like a searing fire, and she gripped her hands tightly to contain herself.

“But I held on. I held on, remembering the promise I made to you, even when those useless bastards kept jabbering about finding nothing!”

It was clear he couldn’t control his emotions anymore. The light in his golden eyes flickered like a crack in lightning.

“But my nature doesn’t change. It can’t. This personality, where else could it go? So, I did it. I threw away that precious promise. I couldn’t leave your life in the hands of those idiots.”

He twisted into a bitter smile and reached out toward her. Sebelia silently looked up at him. His hand brushed past her and grabbed something behind her.

“I won’t apologize for breaking that promise.”

Sebelia looked down at the small box in her arms, speechless. On the soft cloth inside lay the familiar, delicate glass flowers.

“But for being this kind of man, I owe you an apology.”

“…”

“I’m sorry.”

With those words, Dehart turned his back. Sebelia grabbed his wrist.
