When Sebelia first witnessed him unleashing his frustration, she was left speechless. When she saw him furiously raising his voice, breaking his promise with no shame, it almost ignited a fire within her. But despite everything, she had seen it.

[But I held on. I held on, remembering the promise I made to you, even when those useless bastards kept jabbering about finding nothing!]

His words were harsh, but his eyes—his golden eyes—were fragile, as if they could shatter at any moment. Those eyes kept drifting around her, lingering, as if searching for something in the space between them.

This man, could it be?

At that moment, Sebelia spoke the last words and grabbed the man who was about to turn away. It wasn’t because she had seen the tears hanging in the corners of his long, sharp eyes.

“Wait.”

Her body tilted forward as she had reached out her hand so hastily. Of course, it was Dehart who caught her before she could fall.

“Be careful.”

He turned his head sharply, as if unwilling to show the moisture in his eyes, and helped Sebelia back up. Then, he tried to walk out, pulling the cloth at the tent’s entrance aside. Sebelia had to stop him again.

“Dehart, where are you going?”

She called him in a calm voice, but Dehart didn’t answer. Instead, he carefully detached her hand from his wrist and tried to move the cloth again.

Sebelia’s blue eyes widened as she looked at her empty hands.

You don’t want to talk to me?

After pouring out all the words he had kept inside, did he want to shut her out like this, not willing to listen to her even once?

At that moment, Sebelia recalled the lesson she had learned from Claude. The men of Inverness were incredibly sensitive, but once they became fixated on something, they shut off their eyes and ears. She had to shatter that fixation.

No matter how she had to do it. Sebelia took a deep breath and used the lowest, coldest tone she could muster.

“Don’t think you can run away like this.”

At the same time, she grabbed his wrist and summoned an illusion.

Whoosh-

The tent, once softly wrapped in fabric, instantly transformed into a vast plain. The high sky stretched above them, and in the distant view, snow-covered mountain peaks stood tall.

And flowers—an overpowering fragrance rose from the ground beneath them. When Dehart opened his eyes, wild rose bushes blocked his path.

“What… is this?”

It all happened in an instant. It felt as if he had been dropped into another world. Dehart opened his mouth in disbelief.

A deep sense of discomfort wrapped around his body.

“Could it be…?”

“Dehart Clayton Inverness.”

Frozen in surprise, Dehart shuddered at the sound of his full name. As he lowered his gaze, Sebelia’s blue eyes, glowing with a cold light, stared back at him.

“Did you do this?”

Dehart turned his attention to the thorny bushes that surrounded him. Red and white roses bloomed around him as if they were wrapping around him.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Dehart asked in a low voice. His pale cheeks and tightly shut lips were stubborn, yet his eyes, hidden beneath his eyelids, still looked like they might spill tears at any moment.

“I already said I’m sorry. This is just who I am. The promise I made with you was never something I could keep from the start.”

The man surrounded by rose bushes let out a sharp laugh. His face, dripping with misery like poison on thorns, was both beautiful and pitiful.

“Why would a promise with a madman be kept?”

His self-deprecating voice gathered at their feet. Sebelia looked at him and suddenly recalled their time in the greenhouse. The red roses blooming behind him like a halo, evoked that moment.

The suffocating scent of roses, the tall glass surrounding them, the intense sunlight pouring down on them, and Dehart, who had been hiding in the middle of it all. Back then, he had been armed with hatred and suspicion, bristling with thorns whenever anyone tried to get close.

That image now overlapped with the present moment.

Maybe that was why. Sebelia felt the fiery emotion in her chest gradually subside. It was similar to the feeling one gets when watching a child that is full of rage, sobbing and shedding tears.

How foolish.

Both him and her.

Sebelia took a slow breath. It became clear after today. She didn’t want him to be hurt, after all. Even when leaving Hillend Hall, it was the same. She had wanted him to mourn and scream for her death, but she never wanted him to lose his will to live and die.

She just wanted him to hurt as much as she had.

I only wanted you to experience the pain, the sadness, and the resentment that I’ve gone through.

Sebelia looked at him with a calm expression. The resentment she felt for him still lingered. His coldness and disregard, and the way he had allied with the people of Hillend Hall who had tormented her, would not be easily forgotten.

But she also felt that the deep wounds in her heart were slowly starting to heal. And it was because she saw Dehart trembling and suffering because of her.

It was selfish, almost shameful, but at the same time, Sebelia realized it was the only way.
