After I Died, My Husband Went Mad - Chapter 66
“There’s no right path after all.”
In the thick of the night within the enveloping forest, Sebelia looked around, certain of one thing – there was no visible ‘path.’ Now, what to do? Lost in thought, something caught her eye.
“…?”
A faint light seeped through the gap in the bag she had placed on the ground. It was so close to the bottom that she didn’t see it.
“What’s this? There’s nothing I brought that should be glowing on its own.”
While she did have a lantern, it wouldn’t radiate such sun-like glow. Besides, even if it were the lantern, the bag would have already caught fire before that.
Sebelia cautiously unlocked the bag’s clasp. Various essentials and items she had bought from the general store blocked the light. She pulled out the items one by one. Finally, the identity of the light became apparent.
“It’s… Ah!”
It dawned on Sebelia that the Ursic doctor had sprinkled something on the medical report after writing it. She knew it had magical properties, but she had assumed it was merely to prevent others from opening it.
I never thought it was for this.
Perhaps the Ursic doctor foresaw the difficulties Sebelia would face. After all, they seemed close. Sebelia carefully took the medical report envelope. As she did, an even brighter light emanated from it than before.
A thin sliver of light rose above the seal on the envelope. Like the beam of a lighthouse cutting through the dark night sea, the light created a path toward the depths of the forest.
“…There it is.”
A smile bloomed on Sebelia’s face, which had been clouded with worry. She promptly organized the bag and took cautious steps forward. Despite the stillness of the air, the underbrush swayed, welcoming her.
Soon, an abyssal darkness, darker than ever before, enveloped her.
* * *
“They’ve been doing weird things around the land they’ve illegally occupied just because they don’t like people?”
“Yes. That’s why they say you need to go in prepared.”
“That’s not what I wanted an explanation for.”
Eli looked down at the items Dehart had purchased from the general store, furrowing his brow. No matter how much he thought about it, he couldn’t understand the mindset of the inhabitants of this city.
“Shouldn’t squatters like that be evicted in the first place? Why on earth would the Baron of Supredi let things escalate to this point by letting such people be?”
A deep frown creased Dehart’s brow as he clicked his tongue. The situation, where he was preparing the ‘necessities’ to enter the Sixth Road, coupled with the fact that someone, possibly Sebelia or not, had fled there, unsettled him.
She was planning to go there even before encountering me.
Chronologically, Sebelia had arrived earlier than he did, having stopped by the general store to buy the necessities for entering the Sixth Road. Considering only that, he didn’t know if she might have been a suspicious person sent to shake his composure.
“This is maddening…”
Dehart slumped into a chair, letting out a groan. Everything was in chaos. It felt like the world was turning upside down and contorting around him. It was like a fierce storm ceaselessly ravaging his surroundings. The sound of the world tearing apart. Eyes flashing like lightning. With his face buried in his hands, Dehart shielded himself from the world.
Her last words echoed in his mind, as if she had been waiting for that moment.
[Let go of your regrets and accept reality. Sebelia Inverness is already dead. Even if she lives, she will never return to your side.]
It felt as if his heart was being ripped out. The surge that shot up felt like blood. But what stained his lips was bitterness, and the only thing wounded was his soul.
I would rather those words had been a dagger stabbing me instead.
If that were the case, he would have died at that moment without feeling anything. It was an absurd thought, but it was sincere.
Even if she’s alive, she won’t come back to me.
Those words, spoken in his ear as she vanished into the feathers, were too dreadful for him. Dreadful enough to make him wish he could die right there.
“Preparations are complete.”
A distant voice called out to him. Dehart rose from his seat with empty eyes. Yes, it would have been better to die back then. He twisted his lips, receiving the foolish burden.
If it wasn’t Sebelia who was in his arms…
“I’ll make them regret being alive.”
The only person he could ever forgive was his wife.
