After I Died, My Husband Went Mad - Chapter 76
After hearing Sebelia’s story and going through the documents she brought, Watts looked at her thoughtfully.
Then, he mumbled under his breath, “Reese’s disease… I see.”
Watts’s intense gaze bore right through her, making Sebelia nervous. She even considered the possibility that his deep eyes could somehow diagnose the illness on their own. But as soon as she saw him pulling out a stethoscope from his pocket, she dismissed her own silly thought.
“Open your eyes wide, and when I give directions, look in that direction,” he instructed.
“Alright…”
Following Watts’s lead, Sebelia felt the back of neck stiffen with nervousness. He checked not only her eyes but also her mouth, her heartbeat, and more.
“Alright. Now, let’s go through your medical report and have a chat about it.”
Sebelia took the medical report from her bag and handed it to Watts. He read the report written by the Ursic doctor with a serious expression, lost in thought for a moment.
After a while, he asked Sebelia how her condition had changed since coming here—whether any new symptoms had appeared.
“Nothing much has changed. When I wake up, my hands and feet don’t move well, and occasionally, I sometimes cough up blood…”
Watts nodded as he listened to her, then locked eyes with her.
“Honestly, there are a few uncertain points that make it hard to definitively say it’s Reese’s disease. Let me be straightforward. If it were Reese’s disease, you’d be completely immobilized by now.”
Sebelia’s eyes widened.
Watts continued, “But you came here just fine. That alone is proof. Probably thanks to Ruth—um, the doctor who wrote the report. Her diagnosis should be accurate, and you came to the right place.”
Watts proved to be an impeccable doctor in the way he could deliver such harsh words with a straight face. Sebelia clasped her hands together and took a deep breath.
“If that’s the case, then I…”
“Yes, it’s probably a different illness, not Reese’s. There are only a few conditions that could be mistaken for Reese’s… Hmm. Let me look into this.”
Sebelia’s head felt dizzy. Swallowing hard, she rested her head against the back of the chair. The mention of a different illness. It was something she had heard from the doctor at Ursic as well.
However, this time, the weight of those words felt different. Now they were hopeful words from the only person who could potentially cure her illness. It was powerful enough to shake her barely settled heart.
Oh my god.
Sebelia exhaled softly, her eyelids trembling. Honestly, she thought she would accept reality calmly. But her hands were clearly shaking with joy.
It’s a lot…
Looking at her trembling hands, Sebelia slowly closed and opened her eyes, her deep relief showing in the sunlight.
Thank god.
She was so happy. Sebelia buried her face in her trembling hands, something warm seemed to be bubbling up from within. She swallowed a hot breath and forced a cloudy smile.
I’m glad I didn’t consign myself to fate.
She wondered what would have happened if she hadn’t come this far. Denisa had told her to go somewhere else, so she might have followed that advice and ended up in an unknown place.
And I would have spent the rest of my life waiting for her.
In that alternate reality, she would think back to what the doctor at Ursic told her and she’ll have wondered whether she could have truly been cured.
When it came down to it, she would have most likely regretted it. She would have thought to herself that she should have gathered the courage to go to Supredi as the doctor suggested. If she was going to end up in god knows where, she should have at least had the courage to make the attempt.
Thank god it didn’t happen that way.
Thank god that she summoned the courage. Thank god for trusting in her own choices and not letting herself just cower.
Sebelia swallowed her surging breath, wiping her warm eyes with the back of her hand. It was hard to breathe as something kept rising up inside her.
“Well, then…”
Watts was unfazed by the emotional state she was in, and simply went about his business. Having witnessed such scenes many times before, it was probably routine for him.
After organizing the medical report, he discussed the plans ahead.
“Let’s start by drawing a bit of blood for a final confirmation. During this time, take the prescribed medication. Your room is on the first floor, and I want you to make your stay as stress-free as possible, just in case.”
As Watts mechanically delivered these instructions, he glanced briefly at the ceiling when he said his last sentence. Sebelia, who had been gazing at him with earnest eyes, naturally lifted her head.
And, as if it were on cue, there was a thunderous crash.
