Can Someone (Anyone!) Please Turn Off the Auto-Skill Setting?! - Chapter 100
David looked at his son with a worried expression. Knowing Aaron’s deep respect and attachment to his grandfather, he feared Aaron might be heartbroken. But to his surprise, Aaron’s face was bright.
“Leo, I get why you accused Nancy. You thought the title of Hero should’ve been yours, and that Nancy stole it from you.”
Aaron nodded as if he understood everything now.
“That’s the truth. She used underhanded means.”
“What underhanded means? Taking the hero’s ring to challenge for the title? Do you really think that’s why the hero’s sword chose her?”
If merely possessing the hero’s artifact could make someone the hero, there should have been countless Heroes chosen that day. If only one person could be chosen, then it should’ve been someone else before Nancy, logically speaking.
Believing such rumors was absurd. Many people had held onto “Hero’s artifacts,” hoping to be chosen, but it never worked.
“You believe those rumors? You’re a paladin.”
Aaron looked at him with pity, as if Leo were a fool.
“Do you think the hero chooses the sword? No. We know better. It’s not up to the hero to pull the sword—it’s God who choose the hero.”
Aaron firmly stated that God would never make such a mistake.
A sudden message from the system flashed in Nancy’s mind. Her eyes widened, and instinctively, she looked up at the ceiling. The temple’s ceiling was painted with the image of God, making it seem as though he was watching her from above.
Ugh, God! If we’re pointing fingers here, it’s your fault for picking me as the hero in the first place! You see all this happening and won’t even help!
Nancy inwardly raged at God, who seemed to be watching from a distance like a spectator.
The message disappeared as quickly as it had appeared. Just then, the prophet, who had been staring into space, suddenly flailed around. He, too, looked up at the ceiling just as Nancy had and let out a long sigh.
“Sir Aaron is right. Ending the long and dragging war with the demons was the destiny God bestowed upon her.”
“And was dealing with demons part of that destiny too? Did God decide that as well?”
Wow, that guy really doesn’t let go, does he? Like a dog with a bone.
God’s messages stopped there, despite Nancy’s plea for more help. At that moment, the elder once again began mouthing words toward Nancy. He looked exhausted from repeating himself, but he didn’t stop. It seemed like he was trying to say something incredibly important.
Nancy focused on his lips. Me… or was it Fe…?
Suddenly, a flash of realization hit her.
“I have a question. Where’s this Ferron you claim to have caught?”
“He’s dead,” Leo answered calmly. Nancy walked toward him slowly.
“If the Ferron is dead, then why didn’t you kill this imp too?”
“I told you, it was to interrogate him.”
“But you’re holding him too tightly. He looks like he could die any minute. Isn’t he a crucial witness?”
As soon as Nancy spoke, the elder imp started trembling and gasping for air. Leo’s father, alarmed, told him to ease up. Leo loosened his grip slightly, but the elder imp dramatically convulsed even more.
“Leo! Don’t kill the only witness!”
“He’s faking it. I’m not squeezing that hard.”
Nancy, watching Leo’s demeanor closely, suddenly lunged at him, trying to pry the elder from his grip, begging him to ease up on the poor witness. For the first time, Leo used his right hand, the one he hadn’t moved until now, to push her away.
Nancy quickly switched her focus to his right hand, grabbing his wrist and yanking off his glove. There, on his hand, was a fresh cut from a sword.
“It’s you. You’re the Ferron.”
Leo’s eyes flashed with panic. The elder took advantage of the moment to bite Leo’s hand and leap onto Nancy’s shoulder, despite groaning in pain from his aching back.
“That’s right, Hero! This man is the one who manipulated us, pretending to be a human when he’s a Ferron!”
“You dare accuse me of such slanderous lies!”
Leo tried to pry the elder off Nancy’s shoulder, but the elder imp clung to her jacket with all his might, not wanting to go back to Leo’s grip.
“Please, Hero, save me!”
Nancy, now being scratched and clung to by the elder imp, felt tears welling up from the sheer pain of it all. How is he this strong? she wondered.
Taking a deep breath, she decided to finish what she had started earlier. Even without a weapon, she quickly incapacitated Leo using her martial arts skills, knocking him unconscious.
“Didn’t I tell you? You’re too weak.”
Nancy shot a wild, defiant look at Leo’s father.
His father took a frightened step back, letting out a whimper.
Nancy briefly considered knocking everyone else unconscious and fleeing, but that thought quickly vanished the moment her eyes landed on Aaron, who stood with a cold, unreadable expression.
No matter how skilled she was, she knew she couldn’t beat him.
Nancy resigned herself to the situation, deciding to quietly wait in the cell with the elder imp until the higher-ups determined what would happen to her.
