Can Someone (Anyone!) Please Turn Off the Auto-Skill Setting?! - Chapter 84
Aaron’s eyes widened at the mention of betrayal. He blinked a few times, tilting his head in confusion.
“Can I ask why you feel betrayed?”
“You’re a councilman’s son, and yet you pretended to be a penniless knight who couldn’t even buy a handful of popcorn in front of me!”
“Well, I didn’t really carry money around.”
Is that because he didn’t bother to, or because he couldn’t? How could she be sure?
Nancy bit down on the hand that was caressing her cheek. She made a loud noise on purpose, but she didn’t actually use any force, so it didn’t hurt at all.
“I just thought you figured it out when I mentioned that my grandfather was the past hero.”
“How exactly?”
“Knowing the names of past heroes and their families is just common knowledge, right?”
Common knowledge for who exactly? Nancy shook her head in disagreement.
Now that she knew Aaron was from such a high-status family, she couldn’t resist bringing it up.
“If you accept my proposal, I’ll let this betrayal slide.”
“What proposal?”
“Hand over all of the reward money you’ll get from completing this mission.”
Aaron let out a small, disbelieving laugh.
Nancy was serious. She didn’t want to go this far, but truthfully, aside from the final battle, he had done most of the fighting. Splitting the reward evenly was starting to weigh on her conscience.
But she had lost everything when her shop burned down. She had no choice but to act shamelessly if she wanted to recover. If he refused, so be it.
“No.”
“Tch.”
“But I’ll tell you something interesting.”
Nancy’s eyes sparkled with renewed hope. She had a feeling he was about to make her a very good offer.
Aaron hesitated, his lips parting and closing as if he was struggling to say something. When she urged him to hurry up, he finally spoke.
“Married couples share everything.”
Nancy blinked twice, slowly processing what he’d said. Aaron, trying to maintain a calm exterior, kept his expression neutral, but she could feel the slight tremble in the hand resting on her cheek.
“So, if you really want my reward too, then…”
Knock, knock.
Someone knocked on the door, cutting off Aaron’s bold words. He sighed, debating whether to ignore it, but when the knocking persisted, he begrudgingly went to answer it.
“What is it?”
“Oh, hey, Brother! It’s been a while! You look well. I’m glad,” said a cheerful voice. “The butler told me the hero was here, so I thought I’d come by and say hello.”
“If it’s a greeting, you can do that at dinner…”
“Ah, excuse me for a moment. So, you’re the hero, Nancy!”
Aaron’s younger brother, Boron, slipped past him and into the room. As soon as he spotted Nancy sitting on the bed, he placed a hand over his chest and greeted her brightly.
“I’m Boron. It’s an honor to meet you, Hero. You’re even more beautiful than I’ve heard.”
He knelt before her and kissed the back of her hand, looking up at her with admiration. His face was strikingly similar to Aaron’s, but his mannerisms were completely different.
Nancy, feeling awkward, gave a small nod and thanked him. Boron smiled, his bright white teeth on full display.
“Please, stay as long as you’d like. Is your room to your liking? If it’s uncomfortable, I could arrange for you to be moved closer to my room…”
It wasn’t Nancy’s room that was moved, but Boron himself. Aaron, scowling, grabbed his brother by the scruff of the neck and dragged him out of the room. Boron kicked and struggled, trying to stay inside.
“Don’t hog the hero to yourself just because she’s your party mate! Now that she’s in this house, we all have a duty to make her feel welcome. I have the right to converse with her too!”
“What you’re doing isn’t welcoming, it’s harassment.”
“No way! I want to talk to her more! She’s going to be the last living hero in my lifetime! No, the last hero in history!”
Boron clung to the doorframe until he was eventually dragged out, shouting for Aaron to put him down. His protests echoed down the hall for a while.
Back in the now-quiet room, Nancy mused to herself. Those brothers really should be thanking their mother every day for passing down such good looks.
