Dear Contract Husband, I Didn't Know You Were Like This? - Chapter 27
The wind-tossed blonde hair dazzled like sunlight, and his smiling face was as beautiful as ever.
Above all, the lively color on his face made Maya doubt her eyes.
‘How much had I cried in front of Kendrick’s corpse.’
She was tormented by nightmares due to the guilt of not being able to save her only friend.
In her dreams, Kendrick always blamed her.
‘Maya, why didn’t you save me? Aren’t you a knight commander? Haven’t you awakened?’
‘I was your best friend, wasn’t I?’
Knowing Kendrick would never say such things, Maya couldn’t escape her guilt.
The few happy memories Maya had from her previous life gradually faded over time.
She became accustomed to being alone.
And she thought she was okay with that.
“Maya, you…”
Seeing him again, it became clear.
‘I missed you.’
She missed the conversations with Kendrick, the way he looked at her and smiled.
Kendrick was the only good memory left for Maya from her past life.
“Are you crying?”
Maya realized belatedly that tears had formed in her eyes.
‘I’ve never been one to cry in my life!’
Embarrassed, her face flushed.
Tristan, who had come to pick up Maya with Kendrick, was just as taken aback.
Until yesterday, she was so spirited, almost unbreakably tough. And now suddenly, she’s shedding tears?
Tristan, concerned by Maya’s tears, frowned.
“Did Alec say something during morning training?”
He knew Alec still didn’t think highly of Maya.
He thought, at the very least, Alec would respect Maya after their duel yesterday…
“I didn’t say anything though,” Alec said in his own defense.
Kendrick, noticing the tears in Maya’s eyes, turned cold.
“Did the Grand Duke…”
“It’s not that! It’s not!”
Desperately shaking her head, Maya turned to Tristan.
“Grand Duke, it’s not that, so please don’t worry. Really.”
After quickly wiping away the tears, Maya coughed and changed the subject.
“I was just so happy to see you after such a long time.”
“Crying because you saw me?”
Though she spoke honestly, it didn’t convince Kendrick.
“Maya, that doesn’t make sense. What happened?”
Kendrick loved Maya, but he knew very well that she was not the type to cry just by seeing someone.
“No, it could happen!”
“You know better than anyone that it couldn’t. Let’s be honest.”
“Ugh…”
So annoying!
Everything Kendrick said was right, but it always got under her skin.
‘I forgot how annoying he could be after not seeing him for so long.’
Maya had never been able to refute his logical and intelligent arguments.
She glared at him and asked,
“What are you doing here? How did you even get to the North?”
“I saw your letter and came. I thought I needed to hear more about the situation.”
“You’re busy though.”
“But it concerns you. I don’t need to worry about the Magic Tower.”
Kendrick tried to continue but closed his mouth upon seeing Tristan standing behind. After a moment of silence, Kendrick spoke sourly,
“I used too much energy getting here, feeling a bit dizzy.”
Kendrick lightly touched his forehead.
“Can you support me a bit?”
“Typical of you. Alright.”
Maya sighed deeply as she looked at Kendrick and skillfully supported him.
Tristan silently observed them from behind.
‘Certainly, they’re not just friends.’
Maya seemed unaware, but Kendrick clearly knew she was about to marry Tristan and yet behaved this way, noticing the awkwardness between Tristan and Maya.
‘I thought I needed to hear more about the situation.’
To others, their relationship might indeed appear strange, even if it was mutually agreed upon.
“Are you okay?”
As usual, Maya held Kendrick’s shoulder and supported him. Although she was smaller than Kendrick, she had no trouble supporting him. Kendrick exaggerated his breath and leaned his head on Maya’s shoulder.
Tristan’s gaze persistently followed them.
However, Maya’s private life was not for him to intrude.
‘I will cleanly divorce you once our contract marriage ends.’
He had said that himself.
‘She didn’t like contact much.’
Maya Pendragon is oblivious. Compared to Kendrick Arkisia, she’s slow to recognize her own feelings. But if she’s bold enough to come here to contract with him, it wouldn’t be strange for their relationship to change anytime soon.
“Grand Duke.”
“Yes.”
Maya gazed intently at Tristan before asking,
“Are you also in pain?”
“…Pardon?”
“My other shoulder is free if you want to lean on it.”
