Ultimate taste? Sublime ensemble? This column, composed solely of paper and ink without a single illustration, made her mouth water just from the scribbled words.
“Oh, I must try this, no matter what!”
Roa Eckladen licked her lips in anticipation.
The place she intended to visit was the most talked-about bakery among the young ladies these days. It wasn’t just word-of-mouth; it had received high praise from none other than Joshie, the top food critic.
Though Roa was deeply passionate about bread, her recent late-night academic conference had delayed her. The fact that she had come across this column meant other young ladies living in Calantus had likely already seen it as well.
“Twenty loaves a day…?”
It had been three days since Roa visited the renowned knowledge hub of Calantus. Her hectic schedule was finally winding down, and she had to return to her homeland the next day. If she didn’t get to taste the baguette today, she would have to wait for the next conference, which meant another year-long wait.
This made Roa quite anxious.
“If I leave now, will I be able to get some?”
The bakery opened relatively late in the afternoon, at four o’clock. With the current time nearing noon in Calantus, Roa quickly prepared to head out. She was willing to wait for hours if necessary, determined to line up before the opening.
The laboratory, work, and endless late nights. Unlike other young ladies who accepted early arranged marriages due to their family’s decisions, Roa, with a natural talent for herbalism, chose to remain single.
Her decision to venture out despite family opposition meant that whining about the difficulties was not an option for her. She quietly endured the challenges and focused on her work.
Even romance was a luxury she couldn’t afford in her busy life.
“If I don’t get to taste the baguette today, I’ll regret it for the entire year.”
Even after leaving for the palace, Roa attracted attention due to her striking appearance—her dazzling silver hair, aloof and haughty demeanor with slightly upturned eyes, and the sharpness in her gray gaze gave her the air of a high-society lady.
Despite numerous suitors and proposals, Roa had always firmly rejected them.
She found the process of evaluating and reconsidering such matters tiring, and the men who approached her all wanted her to give up her career to become a traditional wife and good mother. None respected her career as an individual.
While free love was a pleasant idea, for Roa, who was essentially semi-celibate, a bakery tour was a rare and treasured escape.
“What…Why is the line so long?”
Thanks to her leaving quickly, Roa arrived at the bakery relatively early.
However, it seemed that others shared her idea, as there were easily more than twenty people lined up in front of the bakery. Some left after seeing the long queue, while others, equipped with large parasols, waited leisurely under the sun.
“Wait a minute, it seems like the young ladies of Calantus…”
‘They all have serious eyes when it comes to bread.’
Seeing the determined faces of the young ladies of Calantus, Roa’s resolve was strengthened. If she backed down now, she wouldn’t be called a true bread lover.
‘I can’t lose when it comes to my passion for bread.’
Roa clenched her fists and took her place at the end of the long line.
As thirty minutes and then another hour passed, the young ladies around her began to grow weary. Their mouths were dry, and their hungry bellies felt like they were sticking to their backs. The cries for food from empty stomachs made Roa blush in embarrassment.
‘If I’d known waiting would be this tough, I would have grabbed something to eat.’
All she had for breakfast was a ripe orange and a cup of black coffee. She regretted not having lunch because she left in a hurry.
‘Moreover… the sun in Calantus is unbearably hot.’
The scorching midday sun made the long wait even more agonizing. Having spent so much time in academic conferences and accommodations, Roa was unprepared for the intense heat of the Southern Calantus, which felt like a veritable inferno compared to the capital.
Years of working as an herbalist had made her thick gold-rimmed glasses an essential accessory. Perhaps due to the heat radiating from her own body or the rising temperature of the glasses, Roa wiped the sweat off her lenses.
‘It’s so hard just to get a piece of bread…’
