Don't Ask, It'll Hurt If You Know - Chapter 28
“Phew, thank goodness.”
This was indeed the right approach. Chloe, having overcome a difficult hurdle, deeply sighed with relief.
As they say, the beginning is half the battle—she had a pleasant premonition that she would soon return to her original body.
“Let’s discuss the details in my room.”
Even though there were currently no servants present, Jeremy could never know who might pass by, so he took Chloe to his bedroom.
Being alone in a private space meant he trusted her that much.
“But what does the shattered cross necklace have to do with evil power?” Chloe, having set down one burden, asked curiously.
“Isn’t it just broken from the shock of falling?”
“The cross necklace I gave you was made of Aranti stone, which doesn’t break from ordinary impacts.”
“The necklace you gave me back then wasn’t made of Aranti stone, though.”
“Oh, you remember.”
From Jeremy’s face, which smiled freshly, Chloe realized he had been testing whether she was truly his sister.
She had thought he believed her now, but apparently not. It was a bit disappointing, but that was okay. It just meant her brother was clever. It was much better than being naive and falling for a scammer.
“Although it’s not Aranti stone, it was made of an equally strong mineral. The fact that it shattered into pieces suggests an abnormal force was applied.”
“Like dark magic, perhaps?”
Although Jeremy was the only one in the bedroom, Chloe asked in a small, whisper-like voice, just in case.
“Yes. The blood-drawn magic circle you saw when you first woke up in that body was probably dark magic.”
Jeremy nodded and continued speaking.
“Speaking of which, do you remember what that magic circle looked like?”
“Hmm, well. It was too dark around me, and it happened so suddenly, so I don’t remember clearly, but it might have looked something like this…….”
Chloe picked up a memo pad and pen, tracing her memory to draw the magic circle she had seen. Once finished, the drawing was so simple and strange that it was hard to distinguish whether it was a magic circle or children’s scribbles.
“Here.”
Jeremy’s face also revealed an awkward smile when he saw the drawing. Seeing that smile made Chloe even more embarrassed, and she cleared her throat and spoke curtly.
“That’s why I said I don’t remember well.”
“I didn’t expect it to be like this.”
His tone was just like Mars’s. A sad premonition came over her that her innocent and kind youngest brother was starting to resemble their ill-mannered third brother, and Chloe swallowed a sigh inwardly.
“Given your personality, you wouldn’t have been sitting still. Did you discover any other clues?”
“I wish I had…… but no.”
Chloe let out a deep sigh and shook her head.
“I thoroughly searched this woman’s bedroom but found nothing.”
“Just the bedroom? She might have hidden it somewhere else.”
“That’s unlikely. Using dark magic is an immediate death sentence. Someone as timid as Bianca Lloyd wouldn’t have hidden it elsewhere.”
With the biggest problem of convincing Jeremy solved, and having spoken a lot, thirst suddenly overwhelmed her. Chloe picked up the water bottle on the sofa table and poured water into a cup.
“On the contrary, I think she might have hidden it elsewhere precisely because she’s so timid.”
While Chloe was drinking water, Jeremy, who had been looking at the magic circle on the memo pad, spoke.
“If she hid it in her bedroom and got caught, she’d be immediately branded as the culprit without a chance to explain. But if she hid it somewhere else and got caught, she’d at least have a chance to make excuses—like saying it’s not hers or someone framed her.”
“That makes sense.”
“Moreover, you said the first place you woke up in this body wasn’t even a bedroom, but some strange warehouse-like room. That makes the possibility of hiding it elsewhere even more likely.”
The points were so logical that her head nodded automatically. If Bianca Lloyd were truly as timid a woman as to be unable to hide her belongings elsewhere, the magic circle would have been drawn right in her bedroom.
“So where do you think she might have hidden the clues?”
“Hmm, if it were me, probably in the bedroom or somewhere in the room of the person I hate the most?”
Jeremy lifted the corners of his lips smoothly, smiling as innocently as an angel with pure white wings.
“Because then I could pin all the blame on the person I hate.”
However, the words that came out of his mouth were quite toxic.
