Don't Be Holy! - Chapter 41
“It’s fine.”
He said quietly, his voice holding back shame. Eir burst out angrily.
“What do you mean it’s fine! How can you give up on life so quickly? Even if you live and die for God, you shouldn’t accept death so easily!”
He had meant to tell her to forget about this pathetic smoke, but she seemed to misunderstand something and pulled him tight while lecturing him. She was even on the verge of tears.
“Isn’t anyone out there! Please help!”
Her dramatic performance was unbearably annoying to watch. And somewhat embarrassing too. While being lifted and dragged with his arms feeling like they might tear off, this woman who looked like she didn’t weigh more than a sack of flour was hanging on trying to save him, he couldn’t help but laugh despite the serious situation.
“I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt that this isn’t your doing, so let go.”
“It’s not about giving me the benefit of the doubt, I really didn’t do this! How could I do something like this!”
Whether she was particularly eager to prove her innocence, she even started climbing up his body. Grabbing his pant leg, she climbed up this stranger’s body like she was climbing a tree, eventually managing to wrap her arms tightly around his neck.
Meanwhile, his body continued floating toward the grave. Rubel had given up all dignity and was simply observing the whole situation.
“Would you get off.”
Though he spoke in a dry voice as if asking her to move aside, she wouldn’t give up. If anything, his lukewarm attitude seemed to anger her, and she grabbed his face. Their eyes met directly.
The wind blew her golden-brown hair in different directions. Rubel noticed for the first time that her bangs were slightly curly.
“I’m not doing this to save you right now.”
She spoke as if frustrated. But for someone speaking with such a determined expression, she was still clinging to him like a beetle on an old tree. Was she not aware of this?
Rubel spoke not out of mockery but genuine puzzlement.
“You’re going to save me?”
“Just watch.”
But as if his words had wounded her pride, she flashed her eyes and steeled herself with determination.
She wrapped her arms around Rubel’s neck and, with a grunt, pulled out a dagger.
“Here, try infusing this with divine energy.”
“That won’t work.”
“I’m not aiming for the smoke holding you, I’m going to throw it at the grave.”
Rubel looked where she was pointing. A small golden magic circle was glowing in the center of the grave. The black mist was clearly coming from there, but it looked difficult to hit accurately.
“Can you do it? With this wind?”
“I told you. I’m good at throwing knives.”
In any case, surprisingly, this woman was the only one he could trust in this situation. Rubel finally obediently infused power into the dagger she had given him. She pressed herself even closer to him to aim.
Rubel’s hand twitched with the unconscious desire to support her slipping body, but then he frowned, surprised at having such a thought.
Want to support her? He should be feeling nothing but displeasure in this situation.
He turned his face away to the opposite side where he could feel her breath. Eir, completely unaware of what Rubel was thinking, held onto him while concentrating on her aim, then threw the knife.
Despite the wind’s interference, fortunately, she managed to throw it right into the center of the magic circle she was targeting.
And at that moment, the black mist gripping Rubel’s wrists loosened slightly.
Simultaneously, both Rubel and Eir’s bodies began to slide downward. But the persistent mist reached out again as if unwilling to let its prey escape, and Rubel, thinking it would be better if he was caught alone, shook off Eir’s body wrapped around him.
“This is enough.”
As he was about to surrender himself to the spell’s pull, incredibly, Eir, whose desperation had been on a different level, offered up her own body even faster.
“Now will you believe me?”
Then she was caught by the mist and instantly dragged to Hecate’s grave.
Rubel was so shocked that he forgot to break his fall and rolled several times on the ground. As he lifted his battered body to see what had happened to the woman, there was a flash of light, and suddenly all strength left his body.
In the end, Rubel briefly lost consciousness with what felt like a blow to his head.
