When they entered the dining room, Nox waited at the entrance until Sia came in and moved alongside her. She couldn’t understand why he was walking beside her—until he pulled out her chair for her, prompting a strange expression to form on her face.
Of course, she’d seen men pull out chairs for women before… in soap operas back in Korea.
If it were her family, where even during holidays the men and women didn’t sit at the same table, this kind of treatment would have been absolutely impossible.
Sia sat in the chair with an awkward posture. As she sat, the chair naturally slid in beneath her. It was her first time being treated this way, and with her cheeks faintly flushing, she stole glances at Nox, who sat across from her.
After Nox sat down, Cedric disappeared into the kitchen. The maids followed soon after, moving busily—though there was a subtle sense of distance.
Nox took a sip of water and then rested his elbows on the table, placing his chin atop his interlaced hands. It was improper table etiquette, but no one pointed it out.
“For tonight, rest well. Starting tomorrow, you’ll begin learning your duties.”
He cut straight to the point, skipping any lead-up. At his words, Sia’s eyes widened.
“Excuse me?”
Now that she thought about it, she’d done nothing but say “Excuse me?” or “Yes?” ever since meeting him.
“Did you not say you wanted to become a butler?”
“H-How do you know that?”
How did he know she wanted to become a cat caretaker? Startled, Sia asked back, and Nox furrowed his brow slightly.
“Before that—what are you, exactly?”
“…….”
“You seemed unfamiliar with the Blois territory. Not just Blois—perhaps you’re unfamiliar with the Pelles Empire itself?”
How does this man know everything she was trying to hide? Sia remained silent and simply stared at him. He lowered his gaze as if thinking, then looked up again.
Meeting his heterochromatic eyes head-on, Sia instinctively looked away. They were beautiful and mysterious, but the pressure they exuded was no joke.
“And I’m also curious about that strange herb you carry. Of course, this isn’t an interrogation.”
Before she could react in shock, Nox quickly added that. He had brought her here because she was suspicious, yes, but not to torture her. As long as her hair color wasn’t artificially dyed black, he had no reason to harm her.
She might be the only one in this world who shares his traits.
“…Then, why did you bring me here?”
At last, Sia managed to ask a question that wasn’t just “Excuse me?” or “Yes?” As she did, the food began arriving. Sia realized she hadn’t eaten dinner yet and looked down at the dishes before her.
A fresh salad made of vibrant vegetables looked delicious. She figured she’d better eat first. If something were to happen later, she’d need the strength.
Day 16 of adapting to another world. Sia’s courage was slowly growing.
Nox, watching Sia fixate on the food, reached for his fork—then paused. Piled high on his plate was the food he hated most in the world: salad.
Without a word, he glanced toward Cedric, the only one in the estate who supported him. Cedric’s greatest concern was Nox’s picky eating.
Nox couldn’t send the salad back with a guest present, so he forced his hand to move. He stabbed at the greens, which didn’t pick up easily, and shoved them into his mouth. His face scrunched immediately.
Having grown up reading her older brother’s mood, Sia noticed the subtle change right away. After swallowing her own bite, she asked gently,
“If you don’t like salad, should I eat it for you?”
“…Hm?”
In truth, Nox was tense for another reason too. He’d brought her here on a whim, but since it was dinner, he had thought to eat with her naturally.
Then he realized. Aside from formal banquets or society gatherings, he’d barely ever shared a meal with someone in his own space. Especially not one-on-one. This was essentially his first time.
It felt awkward at first, but hearing Sia’s offer shifted something inside him. Without a word, he pushed his plate toward her. From afar, Cedric’s eyes went wide, but it was already too late.
“Vegetables are like that. If they don’t suit your taste, they’re hard to eat. Personally, I really like them.”
Fresh vegetables. She had always liked them, but they were hard to come by here. Watching her genuinely enjoy the salad, Nox thought to himself—
Maybe… maybe he could forgive her for carelessly handling his most sensitive parts yesterday.
To him, the act of eating his salad for him was worth that much.
