Don't Pick Up the Male Lead in the Apocalypse - Chapter 4
I trudged through the deepening snow, painstakingly pulling my feet through the snow.
All I said to the person on the other end of the radio was that he was in danger.
Then the person on the other end of the radio should have asked me specifically about the dangerous situation.
Whether there’s bleeding, fractures, or what kind of injury it is. Depending on the patient’s condition, the items needed for rescue could vary.
I couldn’t be sure if they didn’t ask because their vehicle was fully equipped with everything necessary, or if their purpose for coming here wasn’t rescue but something else.
‘Especially if this is indeed a survival story.’
I can’t just stand around here.
I started walking towards the few houses I could see ahead.
❅
-Knock, knock.
I knocked several times, but there was no sound from inside.
On a whim, I tried the doorknob.
-Creeeak.
The door opened with the moan of rusty hinges.
I entered the house, but there was no sign of life or warmth.
“I’m really sorry if this is breaking and entering. I’m in a bit of a hurry!”
No response came.
Maybe it was an empty house after all. I quickly moved past the first floor and headed to the second.
‘To think I’ve ended up in a survival story…’
But I was living just fine with my mom, so why did I end up in a novel? Whether it’s possession or transmigration, isn’t that something only kids with no regrets do? So why me, damn it.
“Hahhh…”
Feeling drained, I slid down against the wall before pushing myself back up. I needed to keep an eye on the man I had left behind.
Rubbing the frost off the window, I could see the red padding I had covered him with.
“When will they come?”
I planned to bolt out the moment I was certain they were indeed rescuers. This distance was close enough for my shouts to be heard.
But if they weren’t rescuers…
“……”
The few houses here were the only places to hide.
There was no guarantee they wouldn’t search this house.
‘Should I find a hiding spot in advance?’
Although I had the ability to create lethal snowballs, avoiding danger altogether was preferable.
As I was about to look for a place to hide stealthily within the house,
-Creeeak.
‘They’re here.’
It was a strange-looking car unlike any I had seen before.
No matter how optimistically I tried to think, that car didn’t seem like it belonged to rescuers.
Four people got out of the car. One of them approached the red padding. He roughly pulled the unconscious man up.
The man shook the unresponsive body vigorously, causing him to sway back and forth.
“Where’s the woman?!”
The man’s scream tore through the snowfield, reaching me in my hiding place.
In despair, I slumped down against the wall. They were definitely not rescuers.
‘No. Let’s get our act together.’
The man’s body slipped from the grasp of the brute and rolled powerlessly into the snow.
And the brutes, as if uninterested in a mere corpse, began scanning their surroundings, their gazes gradually converging in one direction. As if on cue, they all looked towards me.
‘I’m f*cked.’
Where should I hide? Under the bed? Too obvious. Then where? The closet? Would they not check there?
As I was paralyzed with panic, unable to think of a suitable hiding spot, they were getting closer.
-Vroom.
A car noise approached from outside. It was very close.
The engine sound didn’t stop immediately. It faded as the car passed by the house I was in.
At least it was a small mercy that among the few houses, this one wasn’t their first target.
‘I really need to move.’
They’ll search the other houses before coming here, so I have some time to find a weapon and hide.
Descending to the first floor, I entered the kitchen and grabbed a frying pan hanging on the wall.
Snowballs had that much power; what about a frying pan?
‘But four men? That’s a bit much, isn’t it?’
Even if I could surprise one with a sneak attack, what about the other three? They won’t just stand by.
I figured it might be safer to hide near the front door on the first floor and then slip out of the house and hide outside when they moved upstairs.
They would typically expect me to hide inside, so maybe they wouldn’t check outside thoroughly.
-Trudging
Suddenly, the sound of footsteps startled me, and I instinctively hid inside near the staircase.
The noise from outside was approaching fast.
Why so soon?
Weren’t they supposed to search the other houses first?
-Creeak, screeeeech.
The sound of the door opening followed by a sound like metal scraping against the wall came next.
In the darkness under the stairs, I held my breath.
Please don’t come this way, go upstairs.
-Screeeeech.
Just when the scraping sound seemed to be getting closer, it began ascending the stairs.
Phew, thank goodness. Once that person completely moves up to the second floor…
“Hey.”
“……”
“I’m right here, you know?”
I look up, and there, staring down at me, is a silver-haired man with clear goggles.
