For My Birthday, I Was Gifted Five Husbands - Chapter 38
The uncontrollable desire could be attributed to his blood.
But when she started to get up, the soreness lessened, giving way to the illusion of increased stamina.
‘Did my mother’s magical contract with them have some effect on me as well?’
Two things were certain right now.
First, her mother had undoubtedly helped her five husbands in some way, dealing with issues that even prominent families struggled to resolve.
‘For example… that huge wound Alfred had.’
If such a large wound had occurred when he was young, he would have died from it. Even if he survived, it was a life-threatening injury that would have made headlines in the Empire. But the fact that no news of it had leaked out?
‘Could it be that my mother covered it up secretly?’
Regardless of how a woman who complained daily about her husbands managed to do such a thing.
The second certainty?
‘To know if they are right for the family, I need to ensure my husbands fulfill their duties to me.’
Though difficult to articulate, it meant that she had to continue having s-x. Perhaps there was some kind of ‘condition release’ that would occur after a certain level of s-x?
‘Before that, I should look into some books about magic. I need to do it today.’
She needed to understand why this was happening to her in a world where magic had vanished. But as she thought about the next event, a groan escaped her lips.
“Ugh.”
“Madam, are you in pain?”
“Haah, no…”
Eugenie murmured as she covered her forehead.
The next partner she would have to sleep with was Magnus Napier, her rival from the Academy days.
* * *
Was it said that Wednesdays were the days when people looked their worst?
Though the claim was baseless, Eugenie thought,
‘By the middle of the week, one might just be too tired for that.’
Thus, the mid-week schedule was particularly unpleasant. She felt the same way about her husband, who was in the middle of the fifth, as she did about ugly Wednesdays.
“You know it’s really amusing when you roll your eyes like that, Norton?”
Magnus Napier, who would share the third first night with her, chuckled as he sipped his tea. Eugenie crossed her arms and glared at him, not pleased with this partner at all.
“Well, at least you didn’t say I look ugly, Napier.”
“Insulting a lady’s appearance is something only a lowly scoundrel would do.”
Magnus chuckled with a haughty expression.
“But I believe there’s room for improvement in the way you hold your teacup.”
“…”
“A trend of staining your dress with brown tea isn’t going to happen.”
Eugenie gritted her teeth at the unpleasantness of the situation but silently gripped her teacup. How long had she been at odds with Magnus Napier?
‘I think it started right after we entered the Academy.’
Honestly, she couldn’t remember much about events from ten years ago, especially considering the turmoil at home and the time when puberty hits that had led her to pressure her mother relentlessly that year.
‘Was that when I saw that incident in my dream at fourteen?’
“Sometimes, Mom… you just seem so pathetic.”
As unpleasant memories surfaced, Eugenie closed her eyes and finished her tea. Yet, even with her eyes shut, she could feel Magnus’s gaze fixed on her.
‘What on earth is he thinking in agreeing to this contract?’
What kind of help had her mother provided to this man, the head of the esteemed Napier family, known for its artistic patronage in high society?
With a subtle glance, Eugenie opened her eyes and looked at him.
Among the five men, Magnus stood out as someone truly of ‘blue blood’. His silver hair shimmered like jewels, perfectly slicked back, and his deep green eyes held an air of arrogance.
He resembled a smooth statue or a fine painting.
‘That’s why he makes me so uncomfortable.’
Unlike this elegantly poised man, Eugenie had no talent for graceful behavior. Choosing to live as a professor’s slave instead of engaging in high society after graduating from the Academy stemmed from that very reason.
Magnus had directly criticized her on graduation day, suggesting that she was running away because she feared failing.
“You’re going to avoid it because you think you can’t do it, Norton. You always act like that.”
The thought of having to sleep with someone like him made her head spin.
‘Well, for now… let’s think about the nighttime activities later.’
Eugenie decided to address her pressing curiosity instead.
“Napier, I’d like to leave this house today.”
“Where do you plan to go?”
“To the capital library, if possible. I have something I want to look up.”
It was Eugenie’s nature to find out whatever she was curious about as quickly as possible. Some might question whether that was why she had become a professor’s slave, but…
‘What will he say in response?’
Given that she had spent a proper honeymoon with the previous two, would he snarkily ask if she needed a dictionary to understand the meaning of ‘fairness’?
However, contrary to Eugenie’s gloomy expectations, Magnus smiled.
“That’s good.”
“Hmm?”
“You want to spend the night out.”
“Um…?”
Eugenie was momentarily speechless at Magnus’s unexpectedly pleased attitude.
