For My Birthday, I Was Gifted Five Husbands - Chapter 51
Carter chuckled wryly and tilted his head.
“You’re using our family’s villa, and you’re already spending the night somewhere else? Especially with Magnus Napier?”
“Hey, why would you sneak out-.”
Just as she was about to point out the reckless spending of the five men, Magnus entered the study, fully opening the door.
“Tsk, Livingston.”
“Aha… Napier.”
In an instant, a subtle disdain lingered in their tones toward each other, but it quickly faded into polite smiles. However, it would be a mistake to believe that the two smiling meant peace was in the air.
First, Napier tapped Carter’s shoe with his cane, smiling slyly.
“With the main entrance intact, you still can’t break the habit of sneaking in like a thief through the terrace?”
“The front door looks too shabby for me to step on it. Oh, my mistake. Was the front door your responsibility?”
Carter smiled, his eyes sparkling prettily. He seemed to have the divine grace befitting a true priest, making one think he was about to offer a divine blessing.
“I could tell by the smell. It’s so strong that it’s unmistakably the scent of a parvenu.”
“You’re calling someone a parvenu when your family is only fifty years older than mine?”
“Oh? Did I bring up your family name?”
“Hah… you’re so childish that I can’t deal with you.”
As Magnus rubbed his forehead and shook his head, Carter made the sign of the cross, praying earnestly.
“O Arthurian, grant wisdom to those who seek to dazzle others with their wealth.”
Eugenie watched this chaotic conversation unfold like a table tennis game, and her lips slowly turned downward. Given her own poor relationship with Magnus, it was clear these two men didn’t have a great history either during their school days.
After graduating and choosing their own paths, they had managed to avoid physical altercations, which was something.
‘First and foremost, it’s loud.’
It was urgent to take the one who came to visit her outside. Scratching the back of her head, Eugenie asked Carter,
“Did you come to see me for a reason…? Is it because of some schedule?”
“That’s right. It’s now my turn to be with Eugenie.”
Carter’s face seemed to glow with excitement from within, shining brighter than ever. Even Eugenie felt a little shy at his enthusiasm.
Furthermore, as he noticed the dress Eugenie was wearing, his eyes sparkled even more.
“Oh, but you’re wearing the outfit I picked out?”
“Uh… you were the one who prepared this here?”
“Yep! It looks great on you, just as I thought.”
Eugenie fidgeted with her dress at Carter’s compliment. Somehow, the dress truly suited her taste.
‘Carter really has known this stuff since we were kids.’
He seemed to know her heart well, from her clothing choices to her snack preferences. There were times in childhood when she thought he might be her soulmate.
But the snide remarks coming from behind pierced her ears.
“What’s with the daisies on Eugenie Norton? Looks like your eyesight has gone completely haywire.”
“Just keep quiet if you don’t know anything about Eugenie’s taste, you fool.”
Carter shot a glance at Magnus, his expression without any humor as he appeared genuinely serious. Seeing that look sent a chill down Eugenie’s spine, as the difference between Carter’s smile and his neutral expression was striking.
However, despite the cold expression from his opponent, Magnus showed no signs of backing down.
“Haha. Do you think I don’t know her taste? It seems you’ve forgotten that I’m the one who chose the land for this estate, Livingston.”
“And I’m the one who brought in the furniture and clothes that Eugenie would love, Napier.”
Eugenie crossed her arms, glancing back and forth between the two men glaring at each other.
‘Oh?’
It seemed the conversation was taking a rather childish turn for a couple of intellectuals.
Yet, the two men appeared completely unaware of this, engrossed in their fierce exchange, their smiles stretched tight.
“You don’t even know what kinds of tea Eugenie likes or what she eats for breakfast, and you have the nerve to flaunt yourself as ‘husband’?”
“Knowing what Norton dislikes is enough. You don’t need to start with her likes.”
“Oh, how charming to have a head of the Napier family who can’t even manage half the basics. It’s about time the imperial nobility underwent a makeover.”
