For My Birthday, I Was Gifted Five Husbands - Chapter 61
At first, Wallace blinked stupidly at Carter’s words.
He had heard them, of course—though barely scraping by in his exams, his hearing was perfectly fine. But had he really just heard Carter Livingston issue a threat?
‘That… that man’s threatening me?’
It was shocking, despite Wallace’s disdain for him. Carter Livingston, ever since assuming his clerical position, had drawn the wavering faithful back to the temple in droves. Part of it was his angelic face and the aura of piety it exuded, but much was due to his gentle and charitable demeanor.
“Did you not hear me, Wallace? I asked how much of my bride’s voice you heard.”
“I-I… uh…”
“For every word you hear, you’ll grow an extra ear hole.”
Hearing the thinly veiled threat again made Wallace’s head spin.
“Th-That’s extreme—!”
“So you did hear something.”
Carter raised his shoulders in a light shrug.
Wallace began to back away, alarmed by the growing tension, though anger flared up within him.
“This isn’t the issue here! You’re supposed to be a priest, and yet you’re engaging in such indecent acts—!”
“I’m already upset that I had to share Eugenie’s voice with others.”
“You brought a woman to a place where Arthurian is worshiped yet you do those things! If I tell High, High Priest Richard—.”
“At least they’re helpful to Eugenie, so I tolerated it. But to think even someone like you got to hear . It’s infuriating. I’ve failed her.”
“You—Are you even listening, Livingston?!”
Wallace snapped, his frustration boiling over Carter who was seemingly more concerned with his internal musings than Wallace’s accusations. He had secretly continued recording Carter’s every threat.
‘He’s utterly insane, completely obsessed with her.’
No matter how physically imposing Carter might be, Wallace prided himself on his agility. If it came down to it, he could escape easily—or so he thought.
Just as Wallace turned to dash toward the setting sunlight beyond the corridor—
“Gah!”
The sharp pain of having his side pierced made his eyes widen. Would a gunshot wound feel this agonizing?
On the floor, struggling in agony, Wallace once groped at his own side. But astonishingly, no blood came out.
That made it even more terrifying. It hurt so much, almost like he was being burned from within, yet his body appeared fine on the outside.
“Ugh, uuuugh!”
“Do not run away without answering my question, Wallace.”
Click. The sound of a bullet being chambered made Wallace look up at Carter with trembling eyes.
‘Could it be… divine power?!’
Divine power could heal a person, but it was also a powerful force capable of destroying the human body. However, he had never heard of anyone using divine power within a bullet.
If he was a knight would be wielding a sword, not hiding such power. And Wallace couldn’t understand why he had to end up like this.
“W-What’s so good about that woman?!”
Eugenie Norton. No matter how pretty she might be, wasn’t she just an ordinary woman? Was it worth going mad over a woman like her, to the point of trying to kill someone?
“Why are you so obsessed with a woman who sleeps with someone else, damn it?!”
“Tch.”
Carter clicked his tongue.
If all he had heard was Eugenie’s seductive voice, he would have ended it with just a few gunshots. He was foolish enough, he was choosing to die in a painful way.
“Can we, even for a moment, dare to call God tainted because of a speck of dust?”
“Wha…!”
Wallace tried to scream, “What nonsense is this?” but his words barely made it out.
Soon after, Carter crushed the recorder beneath his foot.
Before long, the Livingston’s attendants, who had concealed their faces, revealed themselves. Carter gestured towards Wallace’s still body with a casual tilt of his head and gave an order.
“Take care of it. Tell Wellington there was an unfortunate accident.”
“Yes, Master Carter. What should we do about Master Richard?”
“I’ll inform him personally, so don’t worry about it. And if anyone is planning to propose to Apollin Norton, handle it. Just like we’ve always done.”
“Yes.”
Carter glanced at the direction Wallace had been heading. From the fact he was trying to send a telegram, it seemed likely it was either the press or someone on Apollin’s side.
Apollin Norton, who was both striking and deeply ingrained in high society, wouldn’t be satisfied with just Peter Lamburg.
‘If you remove the options, it’ll end up this way.’
She had gossiped behind Eugenie’s back when they were younger, so it was only fair that she would get what she deserved, along with the others.
Carter walked back to the waiting automobile with an indifferent expression.
Eugenie had decided to return here in advance and wait for him…
“…You seem pretty exhausted.”
Perhaps because he had pushed her so hard, she had fallen into a deep sleep.
When Carter got into the seat next to her, Eugenie stirred at the sound and rubbed her eyes.
“Mm… Carter, you’re back?”
