For Sale: Male Lead, Obsession Included - Chapter 62
“Zaki Mercenary Corps, Capital Branch.”
The newly established Zaki Mercenary Corps had grown rapidly over the past few years. Their remarkable growth had even earned them the prestigious title of having the highest mission success rate among the well-known mercenary groups.
This was why Feyden wanted to join the Zaki Mercenary Corps. Unlike the foolish mercenary groups that rejected him simply for being underage, he was sure there had to be at least one intelligent group willing to take him in.
After a brief wait, Handveil, an officer of the Zaki Mercenary Corps, appeared within the communication orb. Of course, he wasn’t the person Feyden wanted to speak to.
—Feyden? What do you want?
Handveil’s voice dripped with sarcasm, clearly unimpressed with Feyden, who had quit the mercenary group overnight. But Feyden didn’t bother listening.
Skipping the pleasantries, Feyden got straight to the point.
“Are you the ones who put someone on my tail?”
Handveil’s eyebrow twitched in confusion, angrily responding that they wouldn’t waste their time tailing some snot-nosed kid.
As he ranted, someone else pushed Handveil aside—a rough hand with thick knuckles, contrasting with brightly painted nails that seemed to highlight the owner’s desire to showcase her femininity.
—Yooo, Feyden.
It was Lily, the real power behind the mercenary group, with her short blonde hair and voluptuous figure. Feyden narrowed his eyes at her sudden appearance.
So, they had something to hide after all.
“Lily, answer me.”
—You’re still as rude as ever to this older sis of yours, kid.
She teased, a smirk forming on her brightly painted red lips as Handveil left the room, grumbling. She leaned closer to the communication orb.
—We got a request.
“To tail me?”
—No, to tail the girl you’re with. So, how about letting our guys off a little easier, huh? They keep dying because of you.
Feyden thought of the two watchers he had quietly dealt with behind Estira’s back.
‘So those guys were sent by Lily.’
“I was personally hired to watch her. Are you trying to share intel? Want to die?”
—Ooh, I love it when you act rebellious.
Lily cooed, leaning forward to flaunt her cleavage.
“Stop dodging the question and answer me.”
—Relax. I’m not here to steal the intel you’ve gathered.
“Who’s the client?”
—It’s supposed to be a secret, but since it’s you, Feyden…
“…”
—They’re unidentified. We tried digging, but no luck.
Lily’s unexpected answer made Feyden furrow his brow. It didn’t make sense. Judging by Estira’s behavior, she seemed like nothing more than a common girl.
“Who is this Estira girl anyway? Why is someone hiring you to tail her?”
Feyden began to seriously consider whether he should cancel his contract with Estira. The whole situation reeked of trouble.
—She’s not much, from what I can tell.
“Not by your standards.”
—…Honestly, we’re still investigating. No idea where she came from. When we try to follow the trail, it suddenly cuts off at a certain point. It’s weird. That girl, Estira, is suspicious.
Lily was right—Estira was suspicious.
She was traveling in a hurry like someone was after her, acting nervous as if she knew she was being followed. And despite her simple appearance, she had a substantial amount of money.
Feyden pondered as he recalled Estira’s face, debating whether to keep monitoring her as per the request or distance himself from the potentially dangerous situation.
Then, suddenly, Lily yelled through the orb.
—Wait! Feyden! Don’t tell me you’ve fallen for that girl-
“Connection terminated.”
Feyden cut off the call without hesitation. Each of his footsteps as he left the communication room carried a heavy burden of contemplation.
A flicker of regret crossed his mind—perhaps he should have thought more carefully before agreeing to the contract. But Feyden quickly shook off the thought.
After all, wasn’t it the money that drove him in the first place? Estira had offered him a substantial salary, and while he knew the job might come with risks, he had accepted because of the high pay.
Thanks to Estira and the mysterious client’s request to tail her, his pockets were filled with gold coins.
And that was all that mattered. Guilt and conscience were luxuries he couldn’t afford. Feyden repeated this to himself.
“Feyden!”
All he had to do was stick around that naive country girl, sell off the information he gathered, and take care of the occasional bandit.
It wasn’t a hard job.
***
As Feyden left the communication room, I entered next. When the mage asked where I wanted to connect, I made a request, knowing full well it wouldn’t be granted.
“I want to connect to the place the man with brown hair just called.”
“I’m sorry, that’s not possible.”
The mage swiftly declined, as maintaining client confidentiality was a fundamental part of their business.
Since I had anticipated that they wouldn’t comply, I quietly nodded.
If they wouldn’t tell me, I’d just have to figure it out myself.
“In that case, connect me to the capital branch of the Zaki Mercenary Corps.”
The mage hesitated for a moment before reciting a brief spell. After a short wait—
—Why are you contacting me aga- huh?
A surprised woman appeared in the orb, her face filled with confusion.
