Guidelines for the Perfect Goodbye - Chapter 32
“He said it was great, so he’ll probably carry it around.”
Cecilia watched Caroline, who tried to hide her emotions with a bitter smile.
‘Seeing her like this, she really doesn’t have an eye for men either.’
What in the world was so good about that unfeeling boulder.
Caroline had a strained relationship with Ulysses throughout her past life. Her unrequited love for him continued even after their marriage, and there were rumors that Ulysses even chose to sleep in his office to avoid her.
‘Like Logan, sleeping in his office.’
Logan Harper often took naps on his office sofa.
Considering that Margaret’s future husband was just as worthless—if not worse—the marital fortune of the Lasphilla daughters seemed really quite disastrous.
Given that she couldn’t reveal her knowledge of this fact, Cecilia decided to just play along and responded accordingly.
“I’m sure he’ll carry it well.”
Cecilia reassured Caroline, who seemed slightly relieved.
“Right?”
“Of course.”
Cecilia nodded, glancing at the wall clock. It was nearing midnight.
“It’s getting late. Let’s head to our rooms.”
“Thanks, Ceci. Because of you, I was able to give a good gift.”
“It was nothing. Sleep well.”
“Good night. Sweet dreams.”
After bidding each other goodnight, they went their separate ways.
Caroline headed to the family’s chambers on the left corridor, while Cecilia entered the guest chambers on the right.
The Amethyst Room.
No, the room next to it—the Garnet Room.
Its door was carelessly left open, just like its occupant’s nature.
‘As a successor to the Marquisate, he should be more cautious about intruders.’
Cecilia entered the room naturally. It was empty. The room’s owner was still detained in the dining room downstairs by Cecilia’s father.
Adam was always curious about Nigel’s financial acumen as he had made a fortune at a young age through investment.
Cecilia distinctly recalled this night in the past. After a long discussion about money, they only rose from their seats when the midnight chimes rang.
At that moment, Cecilia, coming out of the bathroom, encountered Nigel.
He scorned her and muttered curses under his breath before turning his back on her and hastily disappearing.
That incident remained as a hurtful memory to Cecilia, conscious of her particularly slender physique, was deeply ingrained in her mind.
However, now it was merely a piece of information for her plan.
Today, Cecilia had adjusted the grandfather clock on the first floor to chime thirty minutes late.
She had inserted a small wad of paper in it, so the gears would move slower than usual. When the foreign object eventually falls out and the clock chimes, everyone will think it’s midnight when it’s actually already half past twelve.
The paper bundle Cecilia placed would likely be picked up and burned in the incinerator by the young maid responsible for morning cleaning.
So, now was the opportunity.
This room was completely empty.
Cecilia swiftly opened Nigel’s suitcase without any hesitation. As the luggage had not been fully unpacked, his belongings spilled out. She reached deep inside and pulled out a pendant hidden deep into one of the bag’s pockets there.
It was a pendant that the former Marchioness Rosencrantz had left behind. For Nigel, it was a precious keepsake and talisman that should never be lost.
Cecilia quickly grabbed the pendant and left the room.
But as she closed the door…
“What are you doing there?”
A voice like a bolt from the blue shocked her.
Startled, Cecilia turned to see who it was and sighed in relief.
“Oh, Miss Lilith. It’s just you.”
Lilith was peeking out from the Garnet Room, eyeing Cecilia suspiciously.
“You… What were you doing just now?”
Lilith asked, her eyes filled with suspicion.
