Hansel’s Enchanted Fairytale: Fill Me Up With Magic! - Chapter 64
***
Heavy breaths and the sound of trudging through snow filled the otherwise silent forest. The quiet was unintentional, a byproduct of the hour they had spent walking together since agreeing to leave the forest.
The werewolf’s long strides made it difficult for Hansel to keep up.
If it were Dante, who was much taller, she wouldn’t have struggled like this. Was it because Dante always walked at a leisurely pace? Or did he deliberately slow his steps for her?
“Hey, can’t you just transform into a wolf? You’d be faster that way. Aren’t you being chased by the master of the forest? Leaving here quickly would benefit both of us, don’t you think?”
Hansel had already been walking for hours before encountering him. Each step sent shocks of pain through her feet, and her legs felt like lead, from her thighs to her calves.
She wasn’t particularly weak, but as a pampered noblewoman, the fact that she hadn’t complained until now was already remarkable.
The werewolf stopped and turned to face her. His sharply defined features were accentuated by the deep shadows under his eyes, making him look even more intense.
“If I transform into a wolf, I can’t conceal my magic. My mind would revert to a wolf’s instincts, and I wouldn’t be able to think rationally. My magic would be wide open, and the master of the forest would immediately sense me. If it weren’t for the master, I’d be running on all fours by now. And by this time, I’d probably already be having an amazing time with my dear Virginia. Don’t you think?”
Hansel wrinkled her nose slightly but managed to hold back her irritation.
Let it go. He’s not even talking about me.
“Why is the master of the forest chasing you? Isn’t h… she supposed to be tolerant of other races?”
Dante had mentioned it once—this werewolf had lied to him.
As a former wolf of Herodt, there must be a complicated history between him and Dante, considering Dante was trying to kill him.
If she played her cards right, she might be able to learn something about the portraits in the corridor from this werewolf. Perhaps this was her best chance to uncover Dante’s past.
If she could figure that out, maybe she’d find a way to reveal her identity to Dante without fearing for her life.
The werewolf made a contemplative sound.
“Do you know who the master of the forest is?”
Of course, she knew. Tousled gray hair, ruby-red eyes. A man who was both cruel and innocent, clumsy yet mysterious. His sharp, cutting features clashed with the gentle, almost dog-like sincerity in his gaze. Dante.
Hansel shook the image of Dante out of her mind.
“Yeah, the Witch of the Gingerbread House. Supposedly a really powerful woman, right?”
“That’s what the nickname says. But you wouldn’t know this as a non-mage, the master of the forest got seriously betrayed by the mages. I ended up getting involved because I was bound to the Herodt family of mages.”
Now that she thought about it, why was Dante nicknamed ‘witch’? He might be handsome, but he didn’t seem feminine at all. Especially with those muscular arms, broad shoulders, and…
Hansel shivered, realizing how frequently she thought of Dante as if it were second nature.
“Hey.”
The werewolf suddenly stepped closer. His large frame loomed over her, and Hansel instinctively retreated.
Before she could get far, her back hit something hard. A tree. She had nowhere to go.
Oh no, I might get trapped like this. I need to get away.
She tried to sidestep along the tree trunk, but the werewolf’s large hand slammed against it, blocking her escape.
Her mouth felt dry as her wide blue eyes darted nervously.
Something about this situation feels very wrong.
The werewolf chuckled as he looked down at her.
“Why do you keep getting distracted after asking a question? You’re making me want to ensure I’m the only thing you can focus on.”
He leaned in closer, his massive frame casting a shadow over her petite form. His face approached hers, leaving her no time to push him away. His warm breath brushed against her ear.
“Wait—what are you trying to…!”
“You know…”
He whispered languidly into her ear. The warmth and dampness of his breath tickled her ear, sending shivers down the back of her neck.
