“Why on earth would a palace attendant be going on a military campaign? There are plenty of apprentice knights in the order, aren’t there? And they didn’t even request my help as an ancient wizard….”
Ivonne raised her voice, insisting that it was absolutely wrong and unfair.
In reality, the reason Ivonne, with her immense power as an ancient wizard, wasn’t conscripted was Herix’s doing. Herix would never send Ivonne to a war zone, a horrific battlefield.
But Rix was different. Since Herix was Rix, Rix had to follow wherever Herix went.
Rix pondered how to explain and persuade Ivonne.
“Hmm…”
It was more difficult now than when he had asked the Emperor to give up all his personal funds as relief. The only one who could influence him was Ivonne.
Rix, who usually followed Ivonne’s words without question, found himself in a position where he had no choice but to defy her, all for her sake. Ultimately, their conflict was resolved through compromise.
“You promise, right? If you get even a scratch, if you cut your fingertip on paper or anything, you must find a medic. Even if the medic finds you annoying, irritating, or bothersome! Of course, the best thing would be for you to not get hurt at all.”
“Understood. I’ll make sure of it.”
Ivonne still couldn’t understand why Rix, a mere commoner, would be sent to a battlefield that even an ancient wizard like herself was not going to. Yet, she couldn’t stop Rix from leaping up in alarm at the suggestion of her going in his place.
“Honestly, maybe it would be better if I went…”
“Your role is… not as a combatant but as a support staff. They said they have enough combat personnel…”
Ivonne, as an ancient wizard, would be considered a combatant. If she were to join, additional personnel would be conscripted to assist her. Rix used this logic to prevent Ivonne from volunteering herself.
“And fortunately, I will be accompanying the Crown Prince. Having an ancient wizard in the capital will help others prepare for and feel secure against invasions…”
Rix spoke at length, unlike his usual brief manner, trying to reassure Ivonne. Given his persistence, Ivonne had no choice but to reluctantly agree.
‘Rix had never been so firm in rejecting me before…’
Ivonne felt a bitter pang, but there was nothing she could do—this was Rix’s response. Perhaps he was trying to distance himself from her little by little.
‘Is he trying to be kind all the way through…?’
It seemed as though he was dragging out the process to avoid hurting Ivonne too much, but why couldn’t he see that this was more cruel? It would be easier to handle if he ended it decisively without leaving any room for hope.
‘Or maybe it’s because he doesn’t realize that’s what being kind entails.’
Such fleeting thoughts came and went.
Soon, Rix emerged with his gear, heading towards the entrance. Ivonne had already packed the other items he would take. The bag she prepared contained some simple snacks, first-aid supplies, and a few magically enchanted self-defense tools.
“All the magical tools are reusable. I’ve included some auxiliary magical reserves, but if they run out, just find any nearby wizard and ask for help. Leave the rest to me.”
“…”
“I’m serious. I can cover all the costs and expenses. Do you know who I am? I’m the owner of the Azolt Transparent Magic Crystal Mine. If needed, you can even use my name. An ancient wizard has her reputation, after all.”
Ivonne chattered away, adjusting Rix’s clothing. Her gaze was busy, checking for any loose buttons or stray threads. It seemed she couldn’t fully relax, as she continued to speak with concern.
“Be very careful. Even though you’ll be with the Crown Prince, he won’t be the one protecting you.”
“…”
“Although he seems a bit soft with me, he can be ruthless with others. If he’s that severe with nobles, he might even be intimidating towards you, as an attendant.”
Ivonne was certain that Herix would not protect Rix. It was a rather harsh observation, but Rix seemed unperturbed. In fact, he was pleased, knowing that Herix had no interest in anyone other than Ivonne.
“Yes, I’ll make sure to protect myself.”
“Just don’t overdo it on your own. Make sure to ask for help when you need it, okay?”
Even though Ivonne had checked Rix’s attire thoroughly, she still felt uneasy. She was certain that Rix was not someone who could be easily defeated, but her anxiety remained. So, she kept repeating her warnings and lingering, while time kept passing steadily.
“Be careful… Be very careful. Keep in touch often. If anything happens, call me. I’ll come right away and just check things out. I’ll take care of the situation there so you won’t need anyone else to assist me.”
Ivonne sounded almost wistful. It felt like sending off a child, or even like releasing something into the wild. Perhaps sensing her feelings, Rix gave a faint smile and took her restless hands.
“Don’t worry. I’ll be careful.”
