“Here you go. The book you asked for.”
“Thank you. You’ve been a big help.”
Isaac, smiling brightly as he took the book Ivonne had brought from the Tens Mansion, responded warmly. Ivonne’s gaze shifted to the newspaper he had been reading.
“Is that today’s evening edition?”
“Yes. I’ve finished it. If you want to read it, go ahead. You haven’t been able to touch the newspaper because of Count Ulfest, right?”
“Yes. It’s a disaster.”
With a sigh, Ivonne unfolded the newspaper that Isaac had set aside. Her bright green eyes were immediately drawn to the section about the current war situation.
Having learned from the recent communication that Rix was safe, her next curiosity was about the warfront that he rarely updated her on.
‘The great wizard from the Osbloom Kingdom has been deployed…’
The wizard, known for their striking dark green eyes and robes, was referred to as the ‘Dark Green Wizard’ and was said to be ‘overwhelming the Sortenic Empire’ in the Osbloom Kingdom.
It was a name mocking Arnold’s eye color with a double meaning. An article speculated that, since this wizard did not participate in the last war, they might be a mercenary hired from another country.
‘How strange. Why would a foreign great wizard help the Osbloom Kingdom?’
Furthermore, how did the Osbloom Kingdom manage to hire this wizard? After suffering a defeat in their prolonged war with the Sortenic Empire, it seemed impossible for them to turn the tide.
‘The war has always been one the Osbloom Kingdom couldn’t win, but they’ve been enduring because they couldn’t afford to lose.’
So why would the Osbloom Kingdom deploy a great wizard in a war they were destined to lose? Even though a great wizard might not compare to an ancient wizard, they were still a significant force.
What could they have been offered to risk their life like this?
Ivonne shook her head, troubled. The rest of the articles continued to report that what was expected to be a quickly suppressed rebellion was actually dragging on due to such variables.
“Have you finished reading?”
Isaac spoke as Ivonne folded the newspaper.
“Yes, thank you. It was very helpful.”
“Anything unusual?”
“Unusual?”
Isaac’s somewhat out-of-the-blue question made Ivonne tilt her head in confusion. The newspaper she had just read was something Isaac had already gone through, so why was he asking such a question?
‘Did Senior find something odd in it?’
If that was the case, was this a test of her political views or her perspective on society? Why?
No matter how she considered it, Ivonne couldn’t figure out Isaac’s reasoning behind the question.
She continued to blink in puzzlement, as if expecting Isaac to provide his usual follow-up explanation. However, instead of offering the expected clarification, Isaac’s smile only grew slightly more pronounced, and he changed the subject.
“By the way, did Count Ulfest visit again today?”
Ivonne was momentarily puzzled but quickly shifted her focus to the new topic of conversation.
“Yes, that’s right. It’s really frustrating. He’s like a complete stalker.”
“That sounds like a stalker to me. Why don’t you report him to the police? With your magical abilities, you should be able to handle someone like Count Ulfest with ease…”
Ivonne shook her head, as if to say ‘don’t even go there’.
“I’ve told you, haven’t I? I reported him to the police. I even told the local residents. But… well, the townspeople are all commoners.”
“Ah, I see.”
Isaac nodded in understanding, as if he grasped the situation without needing further explanation. He had now closed the book and focused on the conversation with Ivonne.
“Every time he visits, he says the same things. Asking where is the real Ivonne, whether I truly don’t love him, and when this started… It’s just nonsensical.”
When Ivonne first met Isaac, she had emphasized how out of his mind Blitzen seemed by quoting his words. Normally, someone wouldn’t ask where the person they’re addressing is while standing right in front of them.
True to Ivonne’s expectations, Isaac had begun to view Blitzen as a truly strange individual.
“That must be really troublesome.”
“Yes, so I’m really grateful to you, Senior. Blitzen’s constant visits were actually quite frightening. No matter how skilled I am with magic, I could still be caught off guard, and Blitzen might use some kind of magical tool against me… I was worried about what might happen if he tried to harm me.”
“I’m just glad you accepted my unexpected visit.”
“That’s true. The visit was indeed sudden… But, yes, there’s no reason to dislike them. Thanks to the Senior, I’ve been able to hide away from Blitzen.”
“Did you manage to secretly rent a lodging?”
“Yes. Although the owner took a few coins and immediately reported my whereabouts to Blitzen. I’ve become so well-known that everywhere I go, I attract attention, and Blitzen’s search has disturbed the townspeople as he’s been rummaging through their homes trying to find me. So, I’ve been staying holed up at home.”
