The snow fairy Berthe had seen was in the artificial forest surrounding the Tens Mansion.
The pale sky continued to pour snow, and since the adults hadn’t cleared the path yet, the children had to forge a new way, struggling through the snowdrifts. The biting wind stung their ears and cheeks, almost as if they would fall off, but the children refused to give up.
Finally, they arrived at the artificial forest. The trees, having lost all their leaves to winter, stood like bare, skeletal branches. With the snow piled on top, the place looked stark and desolate.
‘Looking at it this way, Tens Mansion really does seem like it’s trapped in a cage.’
Ameline stopped walking through the snowy field and releasing a puff of visible air. As she looked around, she remembered that this forest was part of the original design when the previous owner had built the Tens Mansion.
‘Maybe they planted all these trees to trap the mansion here.’
It was an odd coincidence that Ivonne was now living in seclusion there for her recovery.
“Ah, look! Over there!”
Berthe, who had been walking ahead, suddenly pointed toward something. To their astonishment, there, indeed, stood a snow fairy.
The fairy’s white pointed hat glistened, and her white robe emitted a soft glow. She stood lightly on the snow, as if she was too delicate to be human. In her hand, she held the ‘fairy wand’ Ivonne had mentioned. It shone at the tip, sparkling like pure white snow or sugar falling from the wand.
“Wow…”
Ameline exclaimed, almost without thinking.
But then, it happened.
“…!!!”
The snow fairy, who had been walking lightly in the snow, immediately turned to face Ameline. Both Berthe and Ameline gasped in surprise and held their breath.
‘Green eyes!’
The snow fairy had green eyes, just like Ivonne’s. Though they appeared darker, possibly due to the hat, the similarity was enough to make the children relax.
Ivonne, with her green eyes, was such a kind and warm person, so they assumed the same would be true for the snow fairy.
“I am… no, I’m Berthe! Hello, Snow Fairy!”
Berthe quickly greeted the fairy. Her face was full of joy and excitement. Meeting a real fairy, something only found in fairy tales, felt like a dream.
To their delight, the snow fairy nodded and acknowledged Berthe’s greeting.
“I’m Ameline. Hello, Snow Fairy!”
Ameline spoke in an excited voice. She then quickly moved beside Berthe and pulled out her bag.
“I heard the snow you sprinkle is sugar. Could you give us a little of it?”
Berthe quickly followed suit, holding out her own bag in agreement.
“That’s right. Actually, there’s a friend who told me about the Snow Fairy. Her name is Ivonne, you know, the perfect maid who lives at Tens Mansion! But recently, Ivonne has been feeling a little down.”
“She’s sick, so she can’t make cookies or meet with us. But maybe if she eats the sugar from the Snow Fairy, it might help her feel better!”
The Snow Fairy, with her deep green eyes, paused for a moment, as if thinking, before nodding.
“Wow…!”
“That’s a relief, right?”
The children exchanged smiles, their faces lighting up. The cold air had numbed their noses and cheeks, but this moment made the journey worthwhile.
The Snow Fairy, with her dark green eyes, wiggled her fingers, signaling them to come closer. Without any hesitation, Ameline and Berthe walked toward her.
“Ah…?!”
“Ameline?!”
In an instant, the Snow Fairy scooped Ameline up in her arms.
“Snow Fai… Aaaah!”
Before Ameline could even finish calling her name, the fairy flew away, disappearing into the air.
“Er… huh?”
Berthe stood frozen with her mouth wide open. Quickly snapping out of her daze, she shouted, “Ameline, Ameline!”
But no answer came, no matter how many times she called. The cold wind swept through the footprints they had just made, carrying away the traces of their presence.
The only thing left beside Berthe was the blue knit hat that Ameline had dropped.

“Why would she do that?!”
Berthe, shaking from fear and cold, recounted everything to Ivonne, who was fuming with anger. Though Ivonne also wanted to cry, she forced herself to hold it in.
“You should have told the adults and gone out. A Snow Fairy, of all things…!”
She had meant to shout that it was impossible for something so fairy-tale-like to happen in real life, but she couldn’t bring herself to say it. After all, the story of the Snow Fairy was a cherished memory between Ivonne and the children, one she couldn’t just deny.
“I… I know I shouldn’t have…”
Moreover, it wasn’t just a whim to follow the Snow Fairy. Berthe had deeply treasured her memories with Ivonne, which is why she had gone after the Snow Fairy, to hold onto that precious connection.
Ivonne jumped up in frustration, then immediately regretted it. The one most shocked and self-blaming in this moment was none other than Berthe.
“Ha… no, it’s not Berthe’s fault. Really.”
Ivonne sat carefully, trying not to make the chains clink.
Berthe, still holding the warm cocoa cup that Mary had brought her, clutched it with both hands, but the level of the drink hadn’t lowered at all.
“Drink it quickly. You’re freezing.”
“Mm…”
