“Fox! Fox!”
No matter how much she shouted outside, the glistening black fur was nowhere to be seen. Even in her nightwear, Ivonne couldn’t bring herself to go back inside, standing helplessly by the door lost in thought.
‘Why did you run away?’
She had no idea how well it had been doing all this time. Even though the wounds had all healed, the fox didn’t return naturally. Feeling guilty for bringing it from its original habitat so far away to the capital, Ivonne had prepared herself to spend her entire life with it.
It had already been three months since they had been together. It understood every word.
‘Was it the new feed? Did I forget to give it treats yesterday? Was it difficult because the kids kept touching it?’
Ivonne pondered various reasons why the fox might have run away overnight, but since the fox didn’t provide any answers, they weren’t conclusive.
In the end, Ivonne made another round of the house in her nightwear before finally entering her room to change her clothes. Glancing at the clock, she realized it was past ten.
Even though she should have eaten breakfast, she had no appetite. She remembered the bread she had left on the table and the sausages and butter stored in the magical fridge-like device, but her mouth wouldn’t water.
Sitting at the table staring into nothingness, Ivonne eventually felt tears welling up in her eyes.
‘Whenever I sit here it will climb onto my lap…’
Taming was never a one-sided process. Just as the fox had grown accustomed to Ivonne, Ivonne had also grown attached to the fox. Ivonne wiped away a tear with her index and middle fingers and stood up from her seat.
‘I should check the nearby forest.’
If the fox had run away and returned to nature, it might be in the modestly maintained artificial forest behind the Tens Manor.
‘I need to make sure it’s safe and healthy, even if it doesn’t come back.’
Above all, she hadn’t yet released the collar around its neck. If it grew any further, it could choke, so she had to remove it.
In truth, despite all the excuses, she just wanted to hold it one last time. She wanted to wish it well, to be happy, to not get hurt again, and to bid it a proper farewell.
Resolved, Ivonne immediately set out to find the artificial forest behind the Tens Manor. However, there, Ivonne encountered something unexpected.
“Huh? A house in the forest… is there something like that?”
A small cabin had appeared in the artificially grown forest. Despite having roamed the forest daily for three months, she had never seen this cabin before. It was quite dilapidated, but there were signs of human habitation.
‘There was a neighbor so close by…’
She had no idea. It was something she hadn’t heard from the children or the people in the nearby village.
‘Could the fox have gone there?’
As Ivonne cautiously approached the cabin, in the moment she was scanning for the fox, a low, gruff voice sounded from above.
“Hello.”
Raising her head slowly, Ivonne was taken aback.
‘He’s… really tall.’
He had a height and a sturdy build that would require Ivonne to tilt her head back to meet his face. However, perhaps due to the round, rustic design of the glasses covering half his face, his imposing stature didn’t seem threatening.
The twisting black hair and the intensely thick lenses behind which shimmered vibrant purple irises were incredibly beautiful. Perhaps due to the upward gaze, the pupils appeared elongated vertically, evoking a vivid image of a fox.
Feeling as though her throat had constricted, Ivonne couldn’t utter a word, while the man timidly began to speak.
“Today, I… moved in.”
At the man’s words, Ivonne blinked involuntarily. His long and delicate eyelashes fluttered like a butterfly’s wings, appearing delicate and lovely. His expression subtly faltered upon seeing her reaction.
However, behind the thick lenses, his violet eyes contained a strange intensity that Ivonne couldn’t quite comprehend—an enigmatic warmth that was beyond her understanding.
Ivonne extended her hand and spoke,
“Nice to meet you. I didn’t know there was a cabin here. So, I didn’t expect to have a neighbor… I live in the Tens Manor in front of you, no, I’m Ivonne, who lives in the two-story house.”
The man tilted his head slightly and glanced at Ivonne’s outstretched hand.
His languid, wavy black hair flowed discreetly to one side, mimicking his movement. His expression as he looked at Ivonne’s hand was simultaneously innocent, like that of a boy who had just arrived in the city and didn’t know how to shake hands. Yet it also seemed strangely yearning, as if he wanted to chew on her fingertips and swallow them down to the bone.
It was the first time Ivonne had ever felt such a tingling sensation just from someone’s gaze.
As her extended hand began to feel awkward, the man, with his large and thick hands, reached out and held her in his own, saying,
“….My name is Rix.”
