‘If the house is like this, I can’t even take care of anyone properly here.’
Ivonne had come directly to Tens Mansion, thinking it would be warmer and safer than other houses, but despite the underfloor heating, a house with no walls was no longer a ‘home.’
‘Maybe Berthe has already gone back home. Wait, now that I think about it, Berhte’s clothes and shoes weren’t at the entrance.’
Ivonne tried to think in a positive direction, but her thoughts kept slipping into a darker, more fearful place.
‘Did the house collapse first, or did Berthe leave first?’
Despite her attempts to stay positive, Ivonne’s thoughts increasingly spiraled in a negative direction.
‘What if I take Ameline home and then stop by Berthe’s house, but Berthe’s not there? Where has everyone gone? Could it be that the so-called ‘snow fairy’ kidnapped Berthe too? Did Mary, the butler, and Havers also get taken by this snow fairy?’
It felt as though everything in front of her was turning yellow. Ivonne gripped Ameline’s hips and legs tightly. Cold sweat ran down her body, and her palms had already grown damp.
‘What, what should I do…?’
Her heart was pounding furiously. Her fists tightened again and again, but in the midst of it, the nails Herix had carefully trimmed dug into her palms. The sharp sting luckily snapped her out of it. Ivonne quickly shook her head.
‘No, no. Those three are people hired by Herix to monitor me. They couldn’t have been taken easily. If the snow fairy attacked, yes, they would have escaped. They must be in a safe place. Berthe will be there too. It’s okay, even if they were kidnapped, I can track them down, just like I did with Ameline.’
Her hands were shaking, but Ivonne did her best to remain calm. Her heart was pounding so hard she could feel the pulse in her throat. As she steeled herself and turned around.
“Ivonne?”
Someone called her name from behind
“Is it really… Ivonne?”
The low voice sounded almost incredulous. Ivonne instantly recognized the raw, wild tone of the voice. She wasn’t startled. In fact, she turned around with a sense of relief.
“Herix!”
Her bright voice sounded like she had just met a savior in the mud. It had been a long time since she had been so happy to see him, and even longer since she had smiled so eagerly at him.
“When did you return? This is perfect! Do you know what’s going on with the house? I was really shocked.”
Just from the bright smile on her face it showed that she was genuinely relieved, not pretending. She stood still at the stairs for a moment before rushing toward the man, who was standing there, staring at her in silence.
“No, this isn’t the important part! Something’s happened to the children! Do you know where Berthe went? What about Mary? She was on the living room sofa just a moment ago.”
Ivonne continued talking rapidly, explaining the situation as she showed Amelin, who was breathing heavily behind her.
“If I’d been any later, it could’ve been a real disaster.”
Herix’s gaze shifted briefly toward Ameline, then back to Ivonne. She was truly relieved. The smile on her lips, contrasted with the cold sweat at her temples, proved it.
“So, about the usual doctor you always called… Could you ask him to come over now?”
However, throughout all of Ivonne’s conversation, Herix didn’t say a word. Even when Ivonne directed a question toward him.
“Herix?”
“Do you know… how long it’s been?”
“Huh?”
“Ivonne….”
One step, two step. Herix slowly stepped down the stairs. Ivonne instinctively felt a sense of danger.
‘What’s happening?’
She wondered, though the answer didn’t come. He gripped the banister with one large hand, his fingers wrapping around a geranium decoration on the post. A sharp crack echoed in the air as the piece broke under his grip.
“…!”
In the blink of an eye, the geranium ornament shattered.
“He…rix?”
Ivonne gasped, barely managing to speak his name as he forcefully gripped her shoulders with his hands, as large as a cauldron.
“Where… where have you, where have you been… all this time?”
“Ah, it hurts.”
Ivonne was stunned by her own words. Herix was hurting her! She couldn’t move or twist away from his grip because she was carrying Ameline on her back. If she resisted, it felt like the weight of his enormous hands would hurt the small Ameline.
‘That can’t be right.’
There was no way Herix would harm one of the children he had cared for alongside her, like Ameline.
Yet, instinctively, her thoughts were rejected. A siren-like sound rang in her head, signaling the onset of disaster.
