In the fairytales Ivonne used to read to the children, it was written that the Demon King could never find happiness. And, as it turned out, Herix did use the children to threaten Ivonne. So, it was only natural that he destroyed everything once again with his own hands and lost Ivonne.
He was the Demon King, the winter, and Ivonne was the light, the spring.
Just like how winter, no matter how it tries to imitate spring by lighting a fire, could never warm everyone equally, Herix was the same.
Spring, when it loses its sense, is called the ‘false spring’. But that chill, while bearable to those who survived winter, is still far more manageable than the ‘bitter cold’ of winter without reason. A cold that freezes everything without distinction.
The moment he lost his reason and threatened Ameline, the moment he took his anger out on the innocent child, Herix crossed a line he should never have crossed.
‘Truly insane.’
Herix closed the eyes in his mind. He wished he could just paint a picture of Ivonne one last time, but he knew she would never allow it.
Then, a different beast whispered to him.
“Your Highness. Isaac has escaped.”
Ah, really, this was unbearable. Herix’s eyes snapped open at the voice of his assistant, Johann, who had followed him even when he was a beast. Johann’s blue eyes gleamed just as brightly as Herix’s.
“We are currently unable to track him. However, there have been reports that he was seen at the ruined Tens Mansion. Perhaps… he’s searching for the Miss.”
The spring that could make Herix human once again was now in danger, spoken by the very beast who had survived by his side. Without realizing it, Herix rose from his seat with an unknown force
“This is no time for rest.”
Some had called Johann the second-most dangerous madman in the Empire.
“You are not in a position to rest yet.”
Herix fully agreed with the words of the person who had spoken, standing up from the bed. He didn’t care that the astonished medical staff had collapsed in surprise, or that the wizard rushed to conduct a mana test.
Herix knew that despite his many failures, there was still a chance left.
Winter nights were long, and the endless nights belonged solely to winter. He would not allow spring to intrude and bring daylight.
“Bring my coat.”
If anyone were to fall into the abyss, it would be him alone. To achieve that, he was not afraid of losing his claws or fangs, climbing halfway up only to fall again. For Ivonne, he could die, return from death, reverse the world, or repeat it endlessly. He was a man capable of anything.
“Prepare yourself, we’re leaving immediately.”
“Yes.”
At Herix’s firm voice, Johann, who had worried for a long time about whether even this would work, secretly wiped away the beads of sweat on his forehead.
The servants busily treated Herix’s injuries and helped him into his clothes. A wizard approached Johann, who was watching this intently, and asked:
“Will he be alright?”
Johann wasn’t sure what the question referred to, but he could answer with certainty:
“He’ll be fine.”

When Ivonne opened her eyes, she was met with an unfamiliar darkness.
‘Where am I…?’
She tried to lift herself but couldn’t muster any strength. However, just as quickly, the fog that clouded her vision cleared, and with it came the overwhelming pain as if her whole body had been beaten. The most excruciating pain was in her head.
“Ah, ugh…”
Her head. She could hardly make a sound. With her arm, weak and lifeless, she barely managed to touch the back of her head. It was hot and damp. The iron scent that finally reached her nose confirmed the source of her agonizing pain.
‘Blood…’
In the pitch-black darkness, the sight of her palm filled with dark red liquid became clear. They say there’s a big difference between knowing something vaguely and confirming it with your own eyes.
The sight of the blood made her head ache even more. Not only that, but as her once-dazed mind began to clear, fear and terror rushed in.
‘Why am I here?’
Where was she? Who had done this to her? Thoughts spiraled in her mind. Ivonne tried to recall what happened just before she lost consciousness.
‘I definitely… said goodbye to Herix.’
