‘My clothes… there aren’t any signs of them being torn.’
It seemed there had been no external pressure, only violence.
‘At least that’s a relief.’
The fleeting thought passed through her mind.
Ivonne furrowed her brow.
How could she think that it was a relief to be exposed to violence she didn’t deserve? That was such a soft and weak thought. It was even ridiculous that such situations kept happening, especially when she wasn’t powerless. Being vulnerable to surprise attacks was one thing, but this was too much.
Ivonne blamed it on her ‘ordinary’ mindset. Or maybe it was the opposite – perhaps she had become overconfident in her strength and was letting her guard down as a result.
‘Maybe I should meditate and work on sharpening my unconscious ability to stay alert.’
Sitting on the creaky bed, Ivonne immediately scanned her surroundings. The place she was confined in hadn’t changed. She was still in the Western Tower. Rubbing her aching wrists lightly, Ivonne bit her lower lip.
– All of this is by the will of God
A strange voice echoed in her head. It was the voice of someone who had spoken to her just before she had nearly passed out, due to a horrible sensation as if something was leaking into her mind. She held her heavy head in her hands and thought.
‘A face I’ve never seen before…’
Unlike the Emperor, who seemed to have kidnapped her, the figure that had greeted her with such warmth was someone unfamiliar to Ivonne. However, she could recognize his role.
‘The drooping… white Pellegrina over his shoulder.’
She had learned about it while studying to become a palace maid. The Pellegrina is a cloak worn by clergy or those in positions of power, usually in a color that indicates their rank. The white Pellegrina was worn by just one person.
‘The Pope.’
It was then that she realized the man who had appeared from the darkness, as if a demon’s mouth had opened, and who had been welcomed by the Emperor, was none other than the Pope of the Novnie Church.
Ivonne was at a complete loss.
‘He appeared so suddenly that I don’t even know what to make of it.’
Why had the Emperor and the Pope kidnapped her? And why had they locked her in this Western tower? They even brought a bed for her.
‘Sigh… I hope nothing bad has happened to the others.’
If this was a national matter targeting Ivonne, those close to her could be in danger as well.
The first person who came to her mind was Herix.
‘…He’s the Crown Prince, so it probably won’t matter to him. Department Head Johann should be able to handle things well.’
Then there was Larissa.
‘I haven’t been in contact with her for a while, so she should be fine.’
As for Isaac…
‘He should be safe in the sea prison.’
Being locked in a prison sometimes meant complete protection from external threats, right? The villagers probably wouldn’t be able to give much, so there was nothing they could gain by tormenting the villagers.
‘That would be great…’
Unfortunately, Ivonne knew the truth. This was, at best, the most optimistic theory. The world wasn’t merciful, and there would be no mercy from the Emperor and the Pope, who had successfully achieved the trifecta of kidnapping, assault, and confinement.
‘I need to get out of here first. It’s already night, isn’t it?’
She didn’t know where the Emperor and the Pope had gone after leaving her in this place, but this was an opportunity.
There were no restraints on her ankles, no magic inhibitors on her. Nothing could stop her. With pain shooting through her entire body, Ivonne stood up and, gritting her teeth, made her way toward the door.
“Of course.”
As expected, the door didn’t open. Upon closer inspection, it seemed that a magic inhibitor was placed on the door. It was strange.
‘They didn’t place any magic inhibitors on me, but they’ve put one on the door. What does that mean?’
It was puzzling, but there wasn’t time to focus on this.
‘So, the only escape route is that window.’
The barred window, reinforced with crossbars, looked sturdy at first glance, but if she could use magic, she could probably break it easily.
“Mm…”
Ivonne crossed her arms and tilted her head. This was even more bizarre. The Pope and the Emperor had brought her here, locking her up after hurting her. The one person who knew the most about her, that she was an ancient wizard, was Arnold.
How could they leave her here so carelessly? No matter how much attention she paid, she didn’t feel like there was any enormous barrier outside.
‘Could this… be another trap?’
Would escaping through the window activate the trap? Were they trying to make her escape, guiding her toward it? It wasn’t completely out of the realm of possibility.
She immediately moved to avoid the iron bars and tried to open the window slightly. As expected, the moment she opened it, a large rumbling vibration sound filled the air, signaling the activation of a magical formation.
“Ah!”
Startled, she quickly shut the window. She didn’t know what kind of magic it was, but judging by the size of the vibrations, it was undoubtedly a massive spell.
‘Did they leave me here so carelessly, relying on that?’
Ivonne clenched and relaxed her hands. She still felt the aftereffects of the force with which her wrists had been held, the bruises still visible, and it seemed as if she didn’t have much strength.
It might be related to something that had slipped through her mind when the Pope knocked her unconscious.
‘But my head doesn’t hurt…’
It was clear that she couldn’t act hastily. Ivonne decided not to make a rash attempt to escape and instead began to observe the room she was locked in.
