There was a deep sorrow and sadness of parting in that voice, and even in Rix’s opaque pupils, a murky sediment settled. Ivonne didn’t quite realize it in the end.
As the time grew a little late, Rix stood up, saying he should leave. It was sweet that he didn’t linger longer than necessary, considering the other person might be uncomfortable.
“Well then, take care. It’s not far from your house anyway, so you don’t need to be careful.”
Ivonne escorted him to the entrance, and Rix, who bowed his head slightly, headed toward the cabin built in the artificial forest of the Tens Manor without looking back.
As Ivonne silently watched Rix walking along the street without a single streetlight, she felt a strange sensation.
‘…Is he really getting farther away?’
Although Rix’s legs were clearly walking briskly, strangely his stature didn’t diminish. According to the perspective that distant objects appear smaller, Rix should have seemed smaller by now.
‘Weird. Am I just tired…?’
Perhaps it was the fatigue from parting with the fox so suddenly in the morning. Ivonne didn’t dwell deeper on the peculiar neighbor and concluded her day.
That night, Ivonne had a strange dream. In the dream, the front door, which should have been securely locked, opened easily, and in the darkened corridor where all the lights were turned off, she heard the sound of tiny paws trotting. A fox with a small black nose emerged from the bedroom door.
In the dream, Ivonne was in the position of a third person, watching.
The fox didn’t hesitate and hopped onto the bed where Ivonne was sleeping. Its gaze, looking down at her face with varied breaths, was serene.
However, the purple eyes shimmering through the window at an angle from the moonlight reminded her of her neighbor, Rix, whom she had met today. The fox, who had been observing Ivonne for a while, slowly lowered its head.
Then, it leaned down and softly touched her slightly parted lips with its velvety short fur.
At that moment, a transformation occurred. As the fox pulled away, a thick lavender mist spread around, and in its place was the sturdy figure of a man lying on top of her.
The moonlight fell upon his muscular, deeply defined arms, prominent collarbones, and the thick chest underneath, causing them to shimmer with a sorrowful white glow.
It was a sight so irresistibly stimulating and alluring that it was impossible to look away. In the dream, Ivonne knew that man.
‘…Rix?’
There were only a few resemblances, such as the dark black hair and striking purple eyes, but as he gazed at her, the man’s handsome face wasn’t concealed by any glasses. Despite that, Ivonne was convinced that the man lying next to her was Rix. It was a strange occurrence.
Meanwhile, as if he had been waiting for this, the man gently pulled Ivonne into his thick arms. His messy black hair settled over her small neck. And then, his red lips, which she had found so charming, touched the line of her neck.
Kiss. The moment she heard a soft and delicate yet slightly eerie sound.
“….Hah.”
Ivonne jolted awake, drenched in cold sweat. She lay stiffly, only rolling her eyes to check the space beside her. Naturally, it was empty.
“Ah…”
Ivonne raised her limp arm to brush her hair back, gazing at the faint morning light seeping through the window. Looking at the radiant and solemn appearance, she mumbled to herself.
‘Is it… frustration?’
How else could she explain dreaming such a dream? And that too, about her new neighbor, transforming his face at will! Feeling utterly ridiculous, Ivonne had to hit her pillow for a while.
But strange things didn’t stop there. After filling the fox’s empty bowl with food and heading to work, Ivonne discovered a familiar face in the internal affairs office.
“Uh… Rix?”
The very neighbor who resembled her fox, Rix. Stunned, she was approached by her superior, who inquired, “Hmm? Do you already know the new recruit?”
“New… recruit?”
“Yes. I heard he was assigned to our department from today.”
It turned out that he had become Ivonne’s successor.
“It’s been a while. I hope everyone is doing well.”
Johann, the head of the internal affairs department and the Crown Prince’s aide, finally revealed his face after a long time. Despite being the head of the department, as the Crown Prince’s aide, he rarely showed up.
Ivonne had only seen Johann on her first day of work and hadn’t seen him since. It had been a whopping three months.
“Long time no see, Department Head.”
“You should show your face once in a while too.”
“Give all the authorization to the Department Head!”
Johann and the department staff, who had been working together for quite some time, exchanged light greetings and banter.
Now at the age of twenty-five, Johann, with his dark ash-colored hair and striking blue eyes, was a charming handsome man who knew how to laugh amiably. Regardless of gender, he had a charm that won people over.
Johann calmed the teasing remarks of the others and explained the reason for his appearance today.
“Well, everyone, please say hello. This is Rix, who joined our internal affairs department today.”
