The fox caught in the trap with its hind leg seemed to be wandering around as if searching for someone. It appeared both cautious and desperate at the same time.
‘It won’t end well if the gardener discovers it,’ Ivonne thought.
She immediately put on a cardigan over her indoor attire and headed outside. Though her indoor slippers were ill-suited for the task and squeaked as she walked, she didn’t pay it any mind. It was as if she was representing that she was not recognized as the future Countess.
Stepping on the grass and pushing through the bushes, she finally reached the fox, which was quite large.
“Kyaak!”
The fox, upon seeing Ivonne, initially posed a threat, baring its teeth as if a cat were hissing at her. However, Ivonne paid it no mind.
“Oh my, why did you come into someone else’s garden like this…..Just stay still, I’ll help you,”
Ivonne said, speaking to the fox in a gentle manner, almost as she was reprimanding it. Yet, her words seemed to have an effect on the fox, which fell silent as if it had understood her.
“That’s right, you’re a good fox.”
Ivonne lowered her head slightly and gently stroked the fox’s head as it patiently waited for assistance. In the vertical slit of its black pupils, there seemed to be a glimmer of something resembling delight within its purple irises. Nevertheless, Ivonne knew it must be a misunderstanding for this fox, which she had just met, to find her endearing.
Ivonne gently untangled the fox’s paw, quickly releasing it from the trap. Her indoor shoes were now quite damaged, but she paid no attention to that.
“It doesn’t seem too severe… but it’s best to check, just in case.”
As Ivonne lifted the fox, it appeared startled for a moment, but with a single “ssh,” it immediately calmed down. Tearful eyes welled up as if it was deeply moved. It seemed the injured paw was causing quite a bit of pain. Or perhaps, did it genuinely appreciate her assistance?
“You’re pretty. And you listen well. Did you have an owner? I don’t see a collar…”
The mention of “owner” and “collar” caused the fox’s violet eyes to flicker slightly, but to Ivonne’s eyes, they were just ordinary expressions from the fox.
Ivonne carried the fox back to her room. She examined the injury on its paw closely while gently patting its backside. Fortunately, the wound appears shallower than she had initially thought.
“That’s a relief. It should heal in about a week. Once the injury is completely healed, I’ll release you into the nearby forest.”
Ivonne reassured the fox, and by the time she finished speaking, the fox had already fallen asleep.
‘What a strange fox.’
Considering that the fox didn’t have a collar, it was most likely a wild fox, but it seemed so accustomed to human touch. It was as if it had been waiting for someone to pick it up, like the cats that eagerly awaited an owner to choose them.
‘…Why am I thinking these things while I have a fox right in front of me?’
Even she found it amusing, the nonsense that crossed her mind. Yet, for some reason, Ivonne couldn’t help but be concerned about the fox and couldn’t bring herself to leave its side.
‘Maybe I should keep it here until it’s fully healed, before releasing it into the wild.’
Despite her resolve to break up the engagement, she felt strangely attached to the fox. It was quite odd indeed.
However, the next day, Ivonne had to take back the words she had confidently spoken to the fox, “Once the injury is completely healed, I’ll release you into the nearby forest.”
That was because Blitzen had informed Ivonne of their breakup before the fox had fully recovered.
“It seems I’m not excited about you anymore.”
“…”
“So, let’s break up. I’ve found someone I love.”
“Someone you love?”
“That’s right. Even though I offered you poisoned tea, I’ve realized.”
From this point on, Ivonne began to feel uneasy. Blitzen’s words had Ivonne’s mind racing with emergency alerts.
“My destiny lies with Lady Celestia, not you.”
Celestia, someone Ivonne knew very well. She was none other than the villainess from “My Childhood Friend Aims to Be My Husband.” And if Blitzen didn’t break up with her, she was the instigator of “that incident” Ivonne had been thinking about mentioning!
Ivonne found herself involuntarily gaping her mouth.
‘The male lead… cheated with the villainess?’
It truly couldn’t be more absurd. In this world, “My Childhood Friend Aims to Be My Husband” was a world created for the male lead, Blitzen, and the female lead, Ivonne, to fall in love. In such a world, where the male lead didn’t even realize that the female lead’s soul had switched, now he had cheated with the villainess.
‘Could this world be doomed…..tomorrow?’
Unknowingly, Ivonne glanced up at the sky. Unfortunately, the sky was far too clear and sunny to qualify as the eve of the apocalypse. It seemed that even with the change in character traits of the leads , the world was not about to collapse.
Ivonne stifled a chuckle that threatened to burst out.
“Ah, what a cruel twist of fate.”
