“……!”
But just at that moment the dark ocean reflected in Rix’s purple eyes turned towards Ivonne with impeccable timing.
The glance down from his taller stature made Ivonne momentarily feel as though Rix was dominating over her. Her muscles tensed, and it seemed as if time itself had frozen.
Slowly, Rix turned his head, their faces meeting directly. Their gazes intertwined quietly. The features of his face shifted in the shadows as the lighthouse light rotated.
All of these details were etched onto Ivonne’s green retinas like a tattoo.
A gust of wind blew, but Ivonne couldn’t tell if it was salty, humid, or cold.
In the distance, the sound of the sea swallowing the beach with its waves reached them. A cool, slightly salty wind blew, brushing through their long hair.
It was certain that each could now sense the others scent.
“……”
“……”
For a moment, it felt as if they were the only two left in the world.
All the light and noise of the world, even the breath that inflated their lungs at that moment, seemed to vanish.
Just the two of them, alone.
A shadow quietly fell over Ivonne’s face. Their intertwined gaze dropped, and the heavy scent of the man enveloped her. The slightly cold touch of their noses, and just as their lips that had been long silent, were about to meet.
“Ivonne! We’re about to start a fireworks show, want to join us?”
The sound shattered the opaque glass world that had enclosed them.
“……!!!”
No words could fully capture how startled Ivonne was at that moment.
“I-I-I’ll come!”
Flustered and stumbling over her words unlike the usual Ivonne, she ran and fell, scraping her knees on the beach sand.
“But why that jacket?”
“Ah!”
Ivonne had completely forgotten to return the borrowed jacket in the midst of that moment.
“This is―”
As she started to take off the jacket and turned around hastily, she found no one there. It was as if Rix had never been there. Only the black waves habitually rolled in, much like how Rix’s hair had fluttered in the sea breeze.
During the fireworks near the waves, Ivonne never again heard the sound of the sea, which she had thought sounded like a heartbeat. Thump, thump, thump, thump. It was as if her eardrums were taking over the role of her heart.
She couldn’t remember the colors of the fireworks people admired or how many she had lit and thrown to the ground. She was distracted by the scent emanating from the jacket draped over her shoulders, a scent that had completely captivated her.

The next morning, Ivonne received unexpected news from Johann, who visited her early.
“Rix left already?”
“It seems something came up at home.”
“Is it… something bad?”
“Hmm, I’m not sure.”
Johann replied, pushing his tongue against the inside of his cheek. Leaving in the middle of the trip suggested it was not a trivial matter. Ivonne looked towards Rix’s room, feeling an indescribable emotion. It was a strange mix of relief and disappointment.
Or, on second thought, maybe it was more relief.
‘I almost made a real mistake yesterday.’
If her colleague hadn’t called her, things might have gotten awkward with Rix. The thought made her head spin. As Ivonne mulled over the events of the previous night, someone called out to Johann.
“Department head! Can you come over here for a moment?”
“Sure, I’ll be right there.”
Johnan shouted back, putting his hand to his mouth before turning to leave. Before he walked away, he said to Ivonne,
“Oh, by the way, I heard you went outside the resort alone yesterday? I’m glad to see you’re okay, but be careful next time. You never know.”
You never know what? The statement was cryptic, but Johann had already turned away. Ivonne tilted her head watching him leave, then realized something.
‘If Johann knows about Rix’s family situation, does that mean he knows what kind of person Rix is?’
Ivonne had always found it strange that Rix, clearly a privileged individual, lived in a small cabin in the artificial forest behind Tens Mansion. Being with Rix made her forget this curiosity, and even when she remembered, she couldn’t ask him about it.
So naturally, she forgot when with others too.
‘I should have subtly asked the department head.’
She regretted missing the opportunity to learn the truth from Johann.
‘No, it’s not right. Whatever Rix is hiding, like his appearance, I shouldn’t find out without his permission.’
Ivonne quickly corrected her thoughts. Another opportunity would surely come.
She glanced once more towards Rix’s room before heading to breakfast. Following Johann’s advice, she stayed within the resort for the rest of the trip.
But had she already grown accustomed to it?
‘I want to go back soon.’
She no longer felt any new emotions towards the sea, which had once seemed so beautiful.
