With the thin window glass between them, the two of them stood silently, exchanging glances. It was Blitzen who first turned his head.
“Well… for the time being, Lady Cyand will stay at our Ulfest County.”
For some reason, Ivonne found herself unable to leave her spot even after Blitzen, along with all the garden’s fireflies, had disappeared. Her intuition was sharp, but right now, she felt as though her body had turned into a hedgehog.
The next day, Ivonne refused her meal, claiming to have no appetite.
“Ivonne, may I come in?”
Blitzen appeared at her door. He entered without waiting for Ivonne’s response, catching her off guard as she greeted him with the appearance of just waking up. After the firefly spectacle in the early morning, she had fallen back asleep around dawn, and her face still displayed intense exhaustion.
Ivonne rubbed her tightly closed throat due to fatigue and said,
“I just needed a moment.”
“There’s something I must tell you.”
Ivonne began to stand unsteadily and headed to the dressing table to find a comb. However, Blitzen was standing with clenched fists and looking down.
Seated at the vanity table, Ivonne slowly combed through her disheveled cherry blossom-colored hair, as if collapsing.
Swoosh, swoosh…
In the suffocatingly quiet atmosphere, Blitzen finally opened his mouth.
“I came to… explain what happened yesterday.”
Ivonne remained silent, offering only a glance through the mirror. Blitzen, interpreting her response as an acknowledgment, continued a bit impatiently.
“I know your relationship with Celestia isn’t great, but… no matter how bad it is, I couldn’t just leave someone who had taken poison and attempted suicide.”
“…She attempted suicide?”
“Yes, she sent a letter. It stated that she would pay for poisoning you with her own life, by willingly dying alone in the forest next to the County.”
Wondering if it was a hoax, he went to the forest and found Celestia lying there. She was still in critical condition, and Blitzen added that if it weren’t for the commotion caused yesterday, things could have taken a dire turn.
Ivonne remained silent for a while after hearing Blitzen’s words, continuing to comb her hair quietly.
A moment later, she spoke.
“I see. So, she attempted to take her own life. Why do you think she did that?”
Blitzen’s expression brightened slightly, and he seemed relieved. Like a fool, Blitzen didn’t catch the hidden meaning in Ivonne’s words, the question of why Celestia chose to attempt her suicide in the forest near Ulfest County. Oblivious to this, he replied in a cheerful tone.
“She must be feeling a tremendous sense of guilt toward you. That’s why, if Celestia were to apologize, you should consider—”
“But, Blitzen, isn’t it strange?”
“What do you mean?”
Blitzen was a bit uncomfortable with Ivonne’s interruption but patiently waited for her to continue. Ivonne stopped looking at Blitzen through the mirror and instead turned to look at herself, which had become visibly haggard.
“This is the first time you’ve visited.”
“The first time? What do you mean?”
“Since I ingested the poison given to me by Lady Cyand and collapsed. Today is the first time.”
“…”
“But you haven’t said a single word asking if I’m okay.”
Blitzen was left speechless. Now he noticed that Ivonne looked different from her usual self. Listening closely, he even noticed that her cheeks seemed a bit sunken.
‘Could it be that her eyes have dark circles?’
Well, maybe it’s because of the poison. It’s strange. Even though Celestia supposedly ingested a more potent poison, she still looked beautiful.
‘No, she seemed to have become a delicate beauty.’
She appeared so innocent, as if he wanted to protect and care for her. Ivonne noticed that Blitzen was thinking about Celestia? She asked with a calm voice.
“Blitzen, did you mention that Celestia’s condition wasn’t great when you saw her this morning?”
“Huh? Well…”
“Then you should go see her. I’m almost fully recovered now.”
Ivonne continued to comb her hair gently while speaking in a tranquil tone.
Blitzen felt a bit choked up but managed to keep his composure as he watched her
“Alright. I’ll go. Take care of yourself.”
Ivonne didn’t respond. Blitzen left her room quickly, almost as if he were fleeing. After he left, the sound of the comb slipping from Ivonne’s weak grip and falling to the floor echoed in the room.
“Ha…”
The reason she had continued to comb her hair was that she didn’t even have the strength to complete such a simple task of detangling her hair. Ivonne turned her body to face the bed.
“I should collapse on the bed… even if I’m going to collapse.”
By now, her condition might have worsened, but the way to the bed seemed dauntingly far. Eventually, Ivonne attempted to make her way to the bed but ended up stumbling and injuring her finger in the process.
Despite it all, Blitzen remained unaware of her injury.
