Ivonne shook her head, clearing the ludicrous thoughts from her mind. A brooch would be useful for Rix since it wouldn’t require tightening around the neck and can be used as a decoration.
As she stopped in front of the shop, Larissa, who had been walking slightly ahead, came back.
“Do you like that brooch? Should we take a closer look?”
“Oh, is that okay? Actually, I have a neighbor I’m currently living with, and his eyes are purple.”
“Ah, the newbie who joined out of the blue a month ago?”
“Yes, that’s him.”
“Hmm, I actually don’t really know what Rix looks like. All I know is that he wears incredibly thick glasses. But his eyes were purple?”
“You didn’t know?”
Ivonne blinked in surprise. How could anyone not notice purple, of all colors?
‘Even if the glasses make his eyes look small, that doesn’t mean you can’t see the color of his irises…’
From the side, the purple was distinctly visible. Even in a dark bar, those animal-like, vivid eyes belonged to Rix. Such a rare sight couldn’t have gone unnoticed.
Yet, Larissa found Ivonne’s observation even more perplexing.
“Really? I only saw him in passing, but that’s what people say. His glasses are so filthy, it’s hard to see his eyes at all. They say even opaque glass would be clearer… But I was curious why he wouldn’t clean such dirty lenses.”
“What…?”
Dirty glasses? Ivonne remembered the glasses being unfashionable, yes, but the lenses were clean. That’s why his small-seeming eyes could so clearly display his distinct purple irises.
“But people had varied opinions about it. Some said black, some said brown, others said blue… But it was purple after all.”
As Ivonne was still processing, Larissa cheerfully continued.
“But purple eyes are known as the Emperor’s mark, right? There were rumors that the Emperor, feeling insecure about purple eyes, wouldn’t let those who have them live… I guess that was just a rumor.”

Ivonne returned home at a rather ordinary time. Or rather, considering it was summer, returning at six could even be considered early. However, Rix was trembling with the fear that Ivonne might abandon him. He had already strangled himself three times in his anxiety.
If it hadn’t been for Johann labeling his condition as ‘separation anxiety’, Rix might have continued to torment himself until he passed out. But as the saying goes, after hardship comes relief.
“Here, Rix. This is a gift for you.”
“For me… a gift?”
“Yes, for you, Rix.”
To Rix, who had been anxiously pacing in front of Ivonne’s room as she went to change clothes, she presented a gift she had ‘carefully selected’. Overwhelmed with emotion, Rix even covered his mouth in surprise.
“Is it that unexpected?”
Ivonne chuckled. Did she know how dizzying her smiling eyes were when she laughed shyly?
“Go ahead, open it. I hope you like it.”
Prompted by her gentle urging, Rix’s trembling fingers fidgeted repeatedly. The sight of the ribbon unfurling, even the act of lifting the box seemed too precious to rush.
He wanted to ask Ivonne what face she would make if he said so, but as he unwrapped the gift, Rix found himself speechless.
“How is it? I was told it looks pretty around the neck.”
“…”
“I noticed you didn’t wear anything to the banquet yesterday, so I bought this. But maybe I’m being too nosy?”
Her tone was cautious. Ivonne was being considerate of Rix’s feelings, with all her attention focused on him. At that moment, Ivonne’s thoughts were filled solely with Rix, and he could sense that.
Therefore, Rix managed to pry open his constricted throat that was sticky with unease, to speak.
“Around the neck… you say.”
Wearing it around the neck. A collar. A sign of ownership.
Rix’s thoughts, exponentially leapfrogging, had now completely commandeered his brain. It was unbelievable. The complex thoughts swirling in his head that had been pondering how he might be forgiven, vanished as if blasted away by a shotgun.
“Yes, that’s right. It seemed like it would suit you, Rix.”
Ah, each word that brushed past her lips felt like it was strangling him. Yet, he felt he could endure this tightness around his neck happily for the rest of his life.
Looking down at the brooch, Rix didn’t hide his reddened eyes behind his glasses as he gazed at Ivonne. The look in his eyes seemed to belittle how much he had been mistreating himself before Ivonne’s arrival. It was filled with a mix of devoutness and submission.
“Ivonne … will you put it on for me?”
His voice trembled. It was natural, considering the much-anticipated moment had arrived.
To become yours entirely, wanting everything to pass through your hands.
His tongue, hidden behind sealed lips because he dared not yet voice certain things, was busily moving. Inside, it tickled painfully, as if butterflies were fluttering in his stomach. Perhaps it was the whirlwind of words he had swallowed over time stirring within his heart.
“Alright. Bend down a bit.”
Her clear voice commanded. His back shivered minutely.
