Isaac’s light brown hair and dark green eyes exuded a sense of freshness and warmth, even during the rainy season. He had a unique, calming presence that made those around him feel at ease, similar to the comfort one might find with a long-time lover or guardian.
“Is this really true? I mean, the article is out, so it must be true… I know that…”
Dissonance set in. The thought that the kind Isaac was actually a spy from a neighboring kingdom with the ultimate goal of destroying the empire was too much to process.
“Isaac really loved this country. Or at least, he said he did. It’s just so hard to believe it was all a lie…”
Eventually, Ivonne’s voice broke as she fought back tears. The shocking truth about someone she knew and the ending in such a catastrophic revelation, was enough to unsettle her deeply.
What did Rix do then? He took the crumpled newspaper from her trembling hands and pulled her into his arms.
“How could this happen…”
“Ivonne…”
He held her tightly and let her cry in his arms, shielding her from the world, as if to keep her tears hidden from everything and everyone.
In his arms, she wept freely. Had there been another person present, or had Ivonne been more aware, she might have noticed something.
She might have seen that Rix intended to hide her tears. His actions seemed less about comforting her and more about possessing even her cries.

“Rix?”
Ivonne, with a towel draped over her wet hair, called out as she entered her study. The sound broke Rix out of his recollection, and he turned to her awkwardly.
“You said you’d clean… but… huh…?”
She expected to see some progress, given his confident declaration to tidy up her study. However, nothing had changed. Looking around in confusion, she eventually saw Rix standing sheepishly by her desk and just laughed.
“Is it so messy you don’t know where to start?”
“Uh…”
“It’s okay. It’s always hardest to deal with someone else’s desk.”
Ivonne spoke casually, but Rix clenched his jaw so tightly it was noticeable. ‘Someone else’s’ desk? How could she think of him as ‘someone else’? The dark flames he kept buried deep within almost flared up.
“It’s fine here, so come out. Let’s have some cake that the department head brought and chat. We haven’t seen each other much lately. I missed you so much it was unbearable.”
If Ivonne hadn’t been so cheerful, he might have lost control entirely. He missed her so much it was unbearable.
“Yes, let’s go.”
Rix smiled foolishly, as people do when they’ve lost their senses, and followed Ivonne to the sitting room.

The hot winds had finally died down, giving way to the arrival of early autumn.
It had been a week since the execution of Isaac, the former western Magic Tower Master revealed as a spy. Though his execution was public, his body was sent back to Osbloom. Oddly, the Osbloom kingdom denied any knowledge of him.
Moreover, the trial for the spy was hastily conducted without proper judicial procedures, leading to rumors that Isaac might not have been an actual spy. However, since Isaac himself did not deny the charges, these rumors quickly faded.
Life returned to normal, as it often does. With constant skirmishes and battles against monsters happening around them, it was almost inevitable that people would become desensitized to death.
Living with the constant presence of death made such indifference a cruel necessity. Ivonne was among those who continued their daily lives amid this harsh reality.
“Remember the Azolt Copper Mine I visited the other day? They discovered a vein of transparent magic crystals there.”
People adapt to their circumstances, and just as Ivonne got used to managing both the southern and western Magic Towers, she received some delightful news.
The Azolt region, where she had submitted an expansion request for the copper mine, was notoriously rugged. Rix had been worried when Ivonne insisted on visiting the area last weekend, but he trusted she had her reasons and saw her off with well-wishes.
It would have been ideal for them to go together, but Rix had his own responsibilities. He had to wrap up the ongoing skirmishes and battles against monsters scattered around.
While fighting was second nature to him, something had changed—he minimized killing as much as possible. This change puzzled even Johann, leading to a conversation between them.
– “Your Highness, why go through the trouble of injuring them? Isn’t it better to just kill them?”
– “You’re so heartless.”
Herix even criticized Johann, leaving him feeling thoroughly wronged.
Yet, Herix paid no heed to his protests.
