– “You’re selling this for 50,000 gold?”
– “Yes, that’s correct. I was actually planning to go back to my hometown due to my poor health, but it hasn’t sold for a while.”
The manager wiped the cold sweat flowing down like rain with a blue handkerchief, looking anxious and unjust. It seemed so dubious that Ivonne checked the amount several times, but the manager was indeed selling the two-story house for a mere 50,000 gold.
– “Was there any unfortunate incident or accident?”
– “Absolutely not! I built it, and I lived in it!”
The manager denied, jumping up and down at Ivonne’s suspicion, even bringing people from nearby households to confirm.
Afterwards, Ivonne completed the sale contract on the spot with a bewildered yet fortunate feeling.
The strangeness didn’t end there. The fox roamed the house as if it were familiar, and thanks to it, Ivonne found an attic and a box containing magical tools that the fleeing manager had not introduced.
The fox even found oil for the lamp, making it seem as if the fox had personally introduced the two-story house.
Moreover, the manager’s claim that it hadn’t been long since the house was completed seemed not entirely false, and there was no urgent need for repairs in the house, as all the furniture was practically new. With minimal capital, Ivonne was able to make a happy new start immediately. It was a fortunate turn of events for Ivonne, who had to start working at the palace right away.
Not only that, but after taking care of the children in the neighborhood a few times, they started coming to play on weekends.
“Ivon~ne!”
“Miss Handmaid~!”
That’s exactly how it went.
“Oh, Berthe! Amelin!”
Dressed in a deep pink dress and an ivory apron, Ivonne greeted them warmly as she opened the door.
Through the crack in the open door, the refreshing scent of early summer seeped in, and the sweet aroma of cookies that had been baking in the Tens Mansion wafted out.
Catching the scent, Berthe’s eyes lit up as she exclaimed
“Chocolate cookies!”
“No, it’s chocolate chip cookies!”
Amelin quickly retorted. Lately, it has become a trend among the children to guess the type of cookies baked by the top-scoring maid of the Tens Mansion. Guessing correctly would earn them an extra treat, so the children were quite eager to participate.
Unfortunately, today there was no one with the right answer.
Ivonne chuckled, furrowing her brows.
“Wrong! It’s s’more cookies.”
“Ah!”
“It’s too hard! I can’t smell any marshmallows!”
The children’s complaints continued for a while like the chirping of birds. Listening to their sulking, Ivonne laughed and redirected the conversation.
“Well, let’s go inside for now. The goat’s milk that Celine brought today is really fresh.”
“Celine’s goats are so cute.”
“Yeah. Oh, but where is the fox?”
The children followed Ivonne as they searched for the fox.
At the sound of their voices, the ears of the fox, which had been crouching and dozing near the living room window, twitched. The fox didn’t particularly enjoy being bothered by the children, but it didn’t run away first either.
It was as if the fox couldn’t bear to let go of Ivonne’s touch as she combed through the messy fur after the children had caused a ruckus and left. Eventually, once again today, the fox named “fox” had to endure being roughly petted by the hands covered in cookie dough.
After finishing the cookies, it was time for the handmaid’s true talent to shine. In fact, the children were more excited for this time than for the cookies themselves.
With an eager expression and flushed cheeks, Berthe asked,
“What magic will you show us today?”
“Hmm… Oh, right. The weather is so nice today. Isn’t it a little hot?”
“Mama said so, but she also said that summer officially starts from today!”
“Huh? No! Our dad said that summer doesn’t start until the rainy season is over!”
Berthe and Amelin began arguing back and forth.
Ivonne intervened between the two as she usually did.
“Well, that’s not important right now. Look. Can’t you feel the breeze… blowing from somewhere?”
At Ivonne’s words, the children closed their eyes as if they were listening to music. At the sound of the leaves rustling outside the window, Berthe’s eyes widened.
“It’s magic!”
“It’s a wind magic!”
The children burst into laughter, their voices echoing like screams.
“Yeah, it’s so refreshing!”
“Yes! Miss Handmaid is amazing!”
As the slightly warm indoor air was replaced by the cool breeze, the sweat on the children’s foreheads began to dry. Watching this scene, Ivonne smiled inwardly as she held her wand. According to the original story, Ivonne’s ancient magic rivaled the primordial power of the gods.
‘I’m not sure if it’s right to use that magic for such trivial things, but oh well, why not?’
Seeing the children’s pure and genuine admiration brings a sense of fulfillment and uplifts her mood. Apart from the various offerings of local produce and gratitude the children’s parents brought for watching over the children despite the distance from the village, it was truly a thankful gesture.
‘Even though it’s a bit far from the village, it was so kind of them to include it in the patrol route as the children come and go.’
Thanks to this, the peaceful life that Ivonne had been dreaming of remained safe and secure throughout.
