I Became a Barbarian's Bride - Chapter 68
Knock-, knock-.
Lost in her thoughts, Nisha exhaled slowly when she heard the knock at the door. The sun was setting, and it seemed the banquet would soon begin.
Thanks to Anita and Zaya, who had periodically come by to bring her food and medicine, her coughing had subsided.
However, the medicine she had taken earlier, even before they had attended to her, had too strong a sedative effect, leaving her body heavy and her mind clouded.
“Come in.”
At her words, the doorknob turned.
“It looks like it’s almost time for…”
Nisha turned her head but stopped short when she saw who had entered.
The man froze just as abruptly upon seeing her.
“Kagan?”
Kagan flinched at the sound of his name, blinking a few times.
“Ah, the preparations are nearly done, so I came to get you, Princess.”
“Ah, yes.”
Nisha momentarily held her breath at the sight of Kagan’s attire.
Draped in a deep navy fabric reminiscent of the night sky, he looked stunning—enough to make her wonder why he’d walked around half-dressed before.
The sheer silk flowed gracefully, embroidered with silver thread like starlight, and the robe he wore fluttered like a cloak with each movement, trailing behind him like a tail.
He wore trousers of ivory fabric and what appeared to be a crown of precious jewels resting atop his head.
His silver hair spilled down from under the crown, and his golden eyes shimmered like a magnificent spectacle.
Nisha had thought him a beautiful man from the first time she saw him, but now, seeing him dressed like this, his appearance felt almost too extraordinary for one person to possess alone.
It would be strange if anyone didn’t fall for him.
‘I have no intention of falling for him myself, though.’
Despite that thought, she could feel her heart beating faster, which she tried to ignore as she approached him.
However, even as she got closer, Kagan only furrowed his brow, saying nothing.
Finally, Nisha hesitantly reached out, brushing her fingers against his as if to gently tug at him, before speaking again.
“Kagan? I’m ready. Can we go now?”
Nisha called out, and as if she had touched something burning, Kagan quickly jerked his hand away with a small sound, swiftly pulling back and looking at Nisha with wavering eyes before abruptly turning his body and nodding.
“Ah, let’s go.”
“Ah, yes.”
Nisha clenched her fist at Kagan’s reaction.
‘So touching him first is not allowed.’
He had always touched her without hesitation, so she had reached out as a way of asking for his attention, but it seemed he hadn’t liked it.
Nisha opened and closed her hand a couple of times, putting a bit of distance between them as they walked.
She was careful not to accidentally brush against him.
So far, Kagan had always approached her first, with a childlike warmth that made her unsure of his true feelings.
But now it was clear—being from another land like she was still unsettling him.
She decided she must never irritate him when he was trying to show her kindness.
It wasn’t as if he had pushed her away harshly, or even in a way that could truly be called rejection, but somehow, it still hurt.
Wrapping her hand gently in her other, Nisha followed behind him while sorting through her thoughts.
In reality, there was no reason to feel disappointed. Rubbing her neck and calming her emotions, Nisha slowly lifted her head, and by then, Kagan was already standing in front of the massive doors.
“Princess.”
Kagan extended his hand to her.
“Ah, yes.”
Nisha stared at his large outstretched hand for a moment before cautiously placing her hand in his.
As if frustrated by her slow approach, Kagan extended his hand further, firmly grasping Nisha’s hand.
