I Became a Barbarian's Bride - Chapter 87
“…What?”
What kind of shocking statement was this?
Kagan’s mouth fell open, utterly unprepared for such words to come from Nisha.
“…I thought that if you were to take a primary wife later, then maybe I would have to as well?”
“Damn it…”
A mix of disbelief and outrage escaped his mouth before he could filter his words.
Nisha flinched at Kagan’s reaction.
“Nisha.”
He positioned her against the headboard, his large frame blocking her view as he leaned in.
“If you keep saying things like that, it’s going to get really unpleasant.”
She flinched.
Nisha’s eyes widened in shock, her pupils narrowing as she inhaled sharply. Kagan, observing her reaction, tightened his lips slightly.
“No.”
After what felt like an eternity, Kagan finally spoke, his voice firm.
“…What?”
“I don’t want anyone else but you, and I don’t want you having anyone else either.”
Nisha froze at his words.
She looked at the man’s face, which was now right in front of her, and took a deep breath before squeezing her eyes shut.
Kagan chuckled softly at her reaction, gently kissed her forehead, and slowly pulled back.
“What do you think would happen if that ability were carelessly given to multiple people? So, if the Kagan took a hundred wives, do you think he would grant that power to all hundred of them?”
At his words, Nisha let out a small sigh of realization and slowly shook her head.
“Why the hell would you even think that?”
“Well, I heard some similar things, and since I’m an outsider, I thought it might be better for someone who knows more about the inner workings to manage the royal palace.”
Kagan fell silent at Nisha’s response. He stared at her in silence, as if mulling over her words for a long time, before finally letting out a sigh, almost like a realization.
“Nisha, did you think that just because I said you didn’t have to do anything?”
Nisha gulped nervously and maintained her silence as he hit the mark.
“Oh, for heaven’s sake.”
He sighed as if exasperated, then let out a long breath before breaking into a soft, incredulous laugh.
“I only said that because I wanted you to be comfortable.”
“What?”
“I didn’t mean you shouldn’t do anything—I meant that if you wanted to, you could, and if you didn’t want to, you didn’t have to.”
“…”
As his words sank in, Nisha’s face gradually turned red until it was completely flushed.
Kagan appeared just as bewildered as he spoke, and Nisha, too, found herself at a loss for words, silenced by the overwhelming realization.
It was only natural that she had assumed she would be rejected.
Nisha’s lips moved soundlessly as if trying to form words, but nothing came out, leaving her in a state of quiet contemplation.
Seeing her eyes tremble slightly, Kagan closed his eyes briefly before opening them again.
He realized that this situation needed to be addressed clearly.
“Nisha, the reason the past leaders of Xieman had multiple wives was that it was mutually agreed upon.”
“Mutually… agreed?”
“Yes. It was either a political marriage, an uncontrollable libido, or some other reason that led to a mutual understanding.”
Nisha blinked slowly, her face showing clear confusion.
She had anticipated some discussion would have taken place, but the mention of an agreement caught her off guard.
“And there’s a rule that the Kagan can only have children with the Tun.”
“A rule?”
Can the birth of a child really be governed by a rule?
The confusion on Nisha’s face deepened as her expression tilted slightly, prompting Kagan to continue.
“Exactly… The Kagan cannot have children with concubines. Similarly, the Tun cannot have children with any other male consorts. In fact, any concubines, whether male or female, undergo a ritual that renders them incapable of having children by damaging their reproductive organs.”
Nisha gasped at Kagan’s explanation. She had never imagined that the Tun’s position would be so firmly established.
“Princess Rose probably didn’t know about these internal matters, which is why she spoke so lightly.”
“And that sub-chieftain…?”
Nisha recalled the bold and straightforward woman as she cautiously continued.
Kagan sighed before responding.
“She probably knew but said it anyway.”
