I Got a Job as the Demon King's Plaything - Chapter 67
Milia, completely unaware of the reason behind the question, answered casually while continuing her work.
“Well, sometimes that happens. If they aren’t registered, it’s like they were never born in the eyes of the gods. They receive almost no blessings from the Twenty-Nine Gods. That’s why it’s important to register them, even if it’s late. I’ve even seen a baby who wasn’t registered until they were two years old. They were incredibly lucky to have survived that long.”
“Ah, I see… so is that why the temple that handled the registration also oversees funerals?”
“Exactly. When someone passes, their name is erased from the divine register. But why are you asking about this?”
“Just curious, that’s all,” Bonita quickly deflected.
She shifted the conversation, trying to keep her tone light.
“I was just reminded of the temple I used to visit when I was younger. It was a small one, where I was registered. They worshiped the god of wind and travelers.”
“Oh, the Temple of Larifinas! I’ve heard that those temples are usually either very small or extremely large, depending on how much they rely on donations from travelers.”
“That makes sense now….. Hardly any travelers ever passed through my hometown. I wonder why they built the temple there in the first place.”
“Perhaps it was a popular route for travelers long ago,” Milia mused.
After Milia finished the treatment and left, Bonita sat on her bed, lost in a disturbing thought.
‘If I erase my name from the register…’
In the human world, it would be as though she were dead. She would no longer receive any divine blessings.
A shiver ran down Bonita’s spine, making her tremble slightly. She now understood why Rento had spoken about sympathy and refused to tell her the second method outright. But for Bonita, there was no other choice. Depending solely on Teshiel’s willingness to impregnate her was far too uncertain. This, however, was a sure way.
As fate would have it, luck was on her side. The documents Rento had taken the day before must have had an error because Teshiel spent a long time in a serious conversation with him. In the end, he dismissed Bonita early for the day. This was her chance. Once she made the decision, she acted quickly. Without hesitation, she changed her clothes and made her way to the stables.
The stable master recognized her immediately. The moment their eyes met, he tried to avoid her, moving away subtly. But Bonita wasn’t about to let him slip away unnoticed.
“Please prepare a horse for me,”
She said confidently.
“And someone to guide me.”
Her tone was so assured that the stable master hesitated, unsure of how to respond.
“Wh-what? Excuse me?”
He stammered, unsure of whether he should use formal language. He knew she was a maid, but he also knew exactly what kind of maid she was—practically the Demon Lord’s mistress. When she looked at him with her eyebrows drawn in distress, her soft voice making an urgent request, he couldn’t refuse.
“I received news that my father had an accident. I need to visit home quickly. I’ll be back before sunset, before they close the gates. I have permission, you can confirm it if you’d like.”
“Oh, well… if that’s the case… Would you like a carriage prepared instead?”
“No, just a fast horse will do.”
A carriage would attract too much attention, and riding on horseback would be faster. Bonita planned to go to the nearby temple near her home, handle the matter, and return as though nothing had happened. That was her plan.
Soon, a stable hand brought a swift horse, helping Bonita mount it before climbing up in front of her. Though the stable hand seemed annoyed by the sudden errand, he said nothing and started to guide the horse toward the address Bonita provided.
Passing through the inner gates, Bonita’s heart raced, nervous that her lie would be exposed. But as they exited the outer gates, a strange sense of exhilaration began to fill her.
‘If this works, I can stay by Lord Teshiel’s side.’
