I Got a Job as the Demon King's Plaything - Chapter 81
Bonita stepped out of the bathtub and wrapped herself in a bathrobe. As she glanced into the mirror, just as expected, her reflection was nowhere to be seen. It seemed that when Teshiel had touched her forehead earlier, it was to cast a spell to conceal her.
‘What’s going on? A lizard, he said… Could it be a dragon? Is it the dragon he once defeated, come back for revenge?’
As she speculated, her thoughts drawing close to the truth, Bonita crossed over to her own room, which was connected to Teshiel’s bedroom. She wasn’t sure exactly what was happening, but she couldn’t stay undressed. She quickly grabbed a decent outfit meant for leisure from the wardrobe and put it on. Just to be sure, she checked the mirror beside her, but even after changing, her reflection still did not appear.
Somewhere in the distance, a loud bang, boom echoed, and the building seemed to shake slightly.
‘Teshiel…’
She looked out the window but saw nothing unusual. Whatever was happening, it appeared to be taking place on the opposite side of the building.
She worries he might get hurt again, just like last time. Even if he ends up covered in blood, he’ll probably brush it off, saying that demons heal faster than humans, all with a casual smile. Her heart tightened at the thought. And what if he sustains a fatal wound…
‘Please, let Teshiel be safe…’
She knelt down to pray, clasping her hands together, but then suddenly froze with a troubling question. Should she pray to the twenty-nine gods or the thirteen demon gods? Would the twenty-nine gods even listen to a prayer asking to save the Demon King? But would the demon gods even care about a human’s prayer?
Unable to pray to any god, Bonita stood back up. Perhaps being by Teshiel’s side, trembling in fear or shame, would be more helpful than praying. But then again, she couldn’t really go to him. If she got caught up in the battle and was injured, it would pain him more than if he were hurt himself. That was likely why he had told her to stay in the room.
‘Maybe I can see something from Teshiel’s bedroom window.’
With anxious thoughts, she opened the door leading to the adjacent room.
‘…!’
She barely suppressed a scream, covering her mouth with her hand. Her eyes had met those of a man.
There were two unfamiliar men in Teshiel’s bedroom. The window was open, suggesting that was how they entered. One man, dressed in a long robe, was inspecting the opposite side of the room, while another man, sleek in black clothing with a large scar on his cheek, was staring right at her. He had been eyeing the door that led to Bonita’s room, and now he began to approach. Bonita held her breath, her legs trembling.
‘Calm down, Bonita. They can’t see you right now.’
Not only was she invisible, but they couldn’t hear her either. Even if she screamed or cried, they wouldn’t be able to hear or see her. She slowly backed away, distancing herself from the door and retreating to a corner of the room. If she stayed quiet, they wouldn’t even know she was there.
Sure enough, the man who entered Bonita’s room looked around and then spoke.
“There’s no one here. Did the door open by itself?”
“The wind probably blew it open since the window was left ajar.”
The man in the robe entered the room as well.
“That guy clearly said there was a woman locked in the bedroom for a week. Did she sneak out while we weren’t looking?”
The man in black picked up the bathrobe that Bonita had taken off.
“She was definitely here until just a moment ago. It’s still damp and warm. She just took it off.”
“Hmm… Let me check.”
The robed man closed his eyes and extended his hands to both sides, murmuring words in a language Bonita couldn’t understand. A bluish smoke began to rise from the ground at his feet.
In the next moment, the man’s eyes snapped open, and he looked directly at Bonita. No way, she thought, swallowing hard as the man in black grinned and walked toward her.
