I Got a Job as the Demon King's Plaything - Chapter 87
“You don’t even know if you’re pregnant or not?”
It wasn’t an answer. Growing more desperate, Bonita asked again.
“Please, just tell me. Is it true?”
“….”
Sophitia remained silent. Bonita, growing anxious, continued.
“I might be pregnant. It’s possible. But… but…” Did you lie to protect me? Am I not actually pregnant? Bonita couldn’t bring herself to say the next part.
Sophitia stared at her, watching Bonita’s lips tremble beneath the blindfold. Then, without thinking, she asked,
“Why did you work there?”
“What?”
“They said you went to the Demon King’s castle on your own. Why did you work by the Demon King’s side? Why were you there?”
Bonita flinched slightly, then repeated the same line she had been saying for days, like a parrot.
“I needed money… It’s true.”
Sophitia sighed.
“If you didn’t really need the bathroom, we might as well go back.”
She grabbed Bonita’s wrist again, and after that, no matter what Bonita said, Sophitia remained silent.
“You’re back. His Majesty the Emperor has asked to see you.”
As soon as they returned, Bonita’s arms were seized tightly by soldiers. She was dragged into the audience chamber and forced to her knees. One of the soldiers pressed her head down toward the floor. Bonita breathed heavily in fear and anxiety.
“Show your face.”
The soldier grabbed her hair and yanked it back roughly. Bonita stifled a scream as her head was lifted and the blindfold was torn off.
In front of her stood a middle-aged man in lavish clothing, his face strikingly similar to Lucas’s. His golden hair was crowned with a circlet encrusted with jewels. The Emperor stroked his beard, inspecting her closely.
“So, you’re the Demon King’s woman?”
Bonita swallowed nervously and quickly bowed her head, pleading.
“P-Please, spare me.”
She tried to seem as harmless as possible, as if she was nothing, no one of importance to Teshiel.
“There must be some mistake. I’m just a maid. For the past few months, I’ve only been serving tea, doing as I was told.”
“They say you’re carrying the Demon King’s child.”
“That can’t be. Everyone knows it’s common knowledge among the faithful citizens of the Empire that a human and a demon can’t have children together.”
As Bonita continued to deny her importance, the Emperor waved his hand dismissively, as if he had heard enough.
“The so-called King of the Demon Realm amused himself with someone like this?”
His face twisted with mockery. He turned his gaze toward Lucas, who was standing nearby.
“Well done, Lucas. You played your part well, driving off the dragon and delivering a serious injury to the Demon King, I hear?”
A serious injury? Bonita’s face turned pale. Lucas, who had skillfully twisted the story to claim all the credit, nodded and gestured toward Bonita.
“That’s correct. If we use her properly, we might be able to banish the Demon King back to the demon realm for good.”
“So you’re asking for an army?”
The words Lucas had been waiting for came from the Emperor, and a sly grin spread across his face. Bonita, panicked, interrupted quickly.
“Your Majesty, no! I have no such value. The Demon King has discarded many women after just a few nights. I’m no different. By now, he’s probably found another maid.”
Her heart burned as she said this. It was true that Teshiel had coldly discarded other women, and that he had initially hired Bonita with similar intentions. Yet she knew deep down that, despite all this, Teshiel considered her special. He would come for her, she was certain of it. And that’s exactly why she had to say these things.
“You can find another maid to pour tea and lift her skirts just by paying a few coins….”
Before she could finish, Lucas slapped her hard, the sound echoing in the chamber. Bonita had no way of knowing, but Lucas’s mother had been one of the many women the Emperor had discarded after only a few encounters. This mention of being thrown away enraged him. Struck by a man a full head taller than her, Bonita fell to the side, unable to even cry out.
“How dare you speak without permission in His Majesty’s presence! Who do you think you’re fooling with your pathetic lies to defend that monster?”
