“So if you try that kind of thing again, it won’t be fun. If you do it one more time, I’ll hang your father’s neck on the city gate,” he said.
“….”
“The king’s temperament isn’t that great, you see.”
“Are you threatening me?”
“Threatening? Well, by now, you should be able to accept it.”
She pushed away Mikhail’s hand and distanced herself.
“Sir is truly impolite and vulgar.”
“Think whatever you want.”
It was as if she could view him however she pleased. Emilia did not lower her guard against him and instead looked at the food on the table.
There was neatly arranged food on the tray, but there were no knives or forks to be seen, as if she was being told to eat with her hands.
‘Are you telling me to eat with my hands?’
He must have avoided giving her a knife and fork. No matter how it was, it couldn’t be helped. She wasn’t someone who hadn’t learned anything; she couldn’t just tear into the meat like a savage with her bare hands.
Emilia von Loren, the daughter of the noble Loren family, and a high-ranking aristocrat. No matter how she had been knighted, she couldn’t engage in the act of eating with her hands like a savage.
Emilia’s face grew even paler. She waved for the servant.
“I won’t eat, so please clear it away.”
She didn’t have a choice in the first place, did she?
He shrugged as if he expected her reaction.
“You should know what the consequences are for your actions so you won’t bother me again.”
Consequences? His tone, as if he were speaking from a higher position, didn’t sit well with her.
“I’m not a child.”
“Children don’t slit their own throats.”
He suddenly reached out and firmly pressed her wound, causing her to bite her lips and suppress a scream.
“Looks like you’re still alive.”
His delighted expression at her struggling was chilling. Emilia didn’t avert her disdainful gaze.
His glinting red irises, already on the verge of madness, made him seem even more deranged.
“It’s ironically contradictory that you’re afraid of having someone you hate by your side, isn’t it?”
“That makes it easier to keep an eye on you,” he said, as if he had no particular intention.
“Why did you come here?”
“Warning.”
His brief response left Emilia breathless. Even breathing was difficult in the face of his unexplained intimidation.
“What makes you so confident? Considering you’re someone who committed treason.”
“What’s so different about the Loren family?”
“…What did you say?”
At Mikhail’s words, Emilia’s eyebrows furrowed.
“Do not insult our family when you’re in connection with traitors! Our family has maintained its authenticity and has never tarnished its honor.”
Mikhail chuckled at her words.
“Really? Is that so, Emilia?”
Emilia fell into silence, then locked eyes with him with a fierce glare.
Crimson irises clashed with green ones in the air, and their mutual stares were unwavering.
The tension in the room, which had seemed unbreakable, eased at the sound of a knock.
“…”
“…”
Neither of them spoke first. No response came from either of them. When there was no reply, the butler spoke from behind the door.
“Duke, Lady Luther is looking for you.”
“…For what reason? Well, I’ll be right there.”
Mikhail was about to ask for the reason but stopped when he caught a glimpse of Emilia. It didn’t seem like the right time for such a conversation.
At the mention of Lady Luther, Emilia’s green eyes sparkled.
‘Adrian’s mother.’
That woman must have played her cards. She was the type to do anything to secure her son’s place on the throne.
“Think carefully about what I said.”
Emilia scoffed.
“I don’t even need to think; it’s nonsense.”
“Seeing you laugh, it seems you can manage here. I didn’t expect the memories of your first experience to fade so easily.”
“….The esteemed Lady Luther is looking for you, you should go see her quickly.”
He lowered himself, extending his hand toward Emilia’s hair, running his fingers through it. His touch sent shivers down her spine, and she promptly brushed his hand away.
“Don’t touch me.”
She swatted away his hand roughly. Mikhail chuckled at her reaction.
‘A knight is a knight, I suppose.’
Her hands weren’t smooth and delicate like those of other women. They lacked the usual softness and were weathered from training. Her unwavering gaze and unyielding determination also set her apart.
If they had met as allies rather than adversaries, they might have gotten along quite well.
‘What am I even thinking right now?’
Mikhail found the thoughts he was having to be disdainful. He flashed a glare with his red eyes, once again, into her eyes.
“‘Easily forgetting shameful memories’… There can only be one reason for that.”
She blushed in embarrassment, and her entire body trembled with humiliation. Her lips seemed ready to utter curses, but she clenched them shut.
The emotions contained in the green eyes that looked at him were crystal clear, but Mikhail didn’t mind. In fact, he felt more at ease when he received her contemptuous gaze.
