“Duke. We still haven’t received a response from the royal family.”
“Leave it. It wasn’t sent expecting one.”
Mikhail signed off on the documents before getting up from his desk.
“The duchy is in disarray with the wedding just two days away.”
“And the woman?”
“Madam has not left her room since meeting the Miss in the annex.”
“Let her be.”
Mikhail pressed his temples.
“What did the doctor say?”
“He’s issued a prescription. However, manufacturing the medication will take some time.”
“How long?”
“At least a week. We’ll need to request ingredients from Valoh as they aren’t available in the Kingdom of Bartsch.”
“…Valoh, huh.”
Mikhail pondered for a moment then pulled out a sheet of paper and began writing a letter.
“Send this. It might speed things up. They’ll be annoyed that I’ve reached out after so long.”
“Who is Miss Boestin?”
“Someone who owes me from my time in Valoh.”
Kartho tilted his head, puzzled.
“A classmate from the academy. We haven’t spoken in a while since I moved to Bartsch, but she’s a man of her word.”
“Does she know about Lady Dahlia?”
“She knows. We attended the academy together.”
Kartho nodded and handed the letter to a servant.
Mikhail felt a headache coming on as he anticipated Boestin’s reaction.
“Also, there’s another matter to report. Lady Luther has brought a candidate for queen.”
“….That was quick.”
“It’s a princess from the Kingdom of Eponsen.”
“Interesting. A princess from Eponsen.”
“I hear you plan to introduce Lady Dahlia at the wedding. She’ll need dresses and accessories. How shall we proceed?”
“Let her have whatever she wants. Make sure she’s as stress-free as possible.”
“Understood.”
“Is the room cleaned?”
“We cleaned it while the duchess was away, but despite our efforts, we found no medication.”
“She must have hidden it well. Or perhaps she’s already consumed it. Leave the knife alone and keep looking for the medication.”
“It’s unlikely she took it in advance as its effects don’t last long.”
Mikhail stood up.
“I need to go into town.”
“Do you have errands to run?”
“Something I forgot just came to mind.”
Mikhail looked at his empty fingers.

Riding in a carriage into the city, he headed to Setrum Street. Due to the time of day, groups of ladies gathered, browsing leisurely.
Suddenly, a woman of his own age came to mind. He realized he had never taken her out to the city before.
Mikhail entered the Delan workshop, the most renowned jewelry workshop in the Kingdom of Bartsch.
The jewelry here was prized not only for the quality of the gemstones but also for the delicate craftsmanship, commanding high prices.
“Welcome.”
“I’m here to look at rings.”
“….!”
The clerk who came to greet him froze upon recognizing Mikhail.
Golden hair and red eyes. Mikhail’s reputation preceded him, known across the kingdom as a powerful duke with royal backing.
His presence commanded a certain awe, more impressive than any rumors.
The clerk stood frozen, mouth open.
“Du-Duke Mikhail, Heinrich, has arrived!”
The almost screaming announcement caused someone to rush out from the back—it appeared to be the owner. He quickly straightened his attire and approached Mikhail.
“Duke Heinrich, we currently do not have any items worthy of your inspection. I apologize. If you could give us some time, we will prepare something suitable.”
Mikhail was beginning to get annoyed. He hadn’t come for any fuss, just to buy a simple ring.
“I intend to choose from what you have available now.”
“Yes, yes! Right this way.”
“I don’t need to look. Just choose a suitable wedding ring and have it packaged.”
“But for a wedding ring, it would be best if you personally chose…”
Mikhail raised an eyebrow. To him, the design of the wedding ring was inconsequential.
The same would be true for the ring’s other intended owner.
“Our shop traditionally has customers choose their rings… Are you not interested in a custom order?”
“That’s why I told you to choose one for me.”
“Then I’ll show you some of the pre-made rings we have in the shop so you can choose right away.”
Tsk. It was a hassle.
Mikhael quickly glanced over the rings brought by the clerk.
“Let’s do this one.”
“…!”
“An excellent choice! Emeralds are quite rare these days; we’ve only made a few sets with them.”
The ring Mikhail chose featured a cushion-cut emerald that shimmered with teal hues.
“The emeralds we’ve recently acquired are particularly notable for their minimal inclusions and high clarity. However, as you may know, Your Grace, emeralds are quite sensitive to heat and have a lower hardness…”
“It doesn’t matter, proceed.”
“Thank you! I will have it packaged immediately.”
For Mikhail, a ring that he wouldn’t wear often, it was fine even if it was fragile and likely to break.
