While heading to meet Lady Luther, Mikhail couldn’t help but think that he needed to move his residence to the ducal estate as soon as possible. There was no reason for him to stay here any longer. The castle would soon find stability, and he needed to leave the place to become truly free.
Standing before the entrance to the reception room, Mikhail nodded to the doorkeeper. As the door opened, he didn’t hesitate and entered.
“Are you so busy that you reveal yourself only now when you’ve been summoned for some time?”
“Mother, don’t be cross. It seems the gift I presented has pleased the Duke.”.
“He couldn’t have possibly taken a liking to her just because he slept once. Did he perhaps feel guilty about bedding a maiden?”
Lady Luther inquired skeptically. As expected, she couldn’t trust anyone, even after checking the blood on the bed. It was as he had anticipated.
Even though he was standing right in front of them, the two of them paid no attention and continued their conversation. Mikhail cleared his throat and said,
“Lady Luther, this gift was given to me by His Majesty the King. I merely accepted it. Furthermore, it’s easier to keep an eye on her if she remains close by.”
Despite his explanation, Lady Luther’s sharp gaze didn’t waver.
Tsk. Mikhail inwardly clicked his tongue. He wished he could just turn around and leave, given the absurd thoughts they seemed to harbor. Even with him standing right there, they didn’t pay him much mind.
Lady Luther continued, apparently losing interest, as she fanned herself and lowered her gaze.
“You said you wouldn’t leave her to dine alone. Why are you keeping the girl alive when she might find the sword and threaten the king?”
Frida von Luther, Adrian’s mother, had not even received proper recognition for her title until Adrian became King. She had earned it solely due to her son’s position, which had provided her some escape from her ambiguous status.
“Lady Luther, if we were to kill that woman now, the castle will once again be filled with bloodshed. I am on His Majesty the King’s side.”
“That may be true. But I still can’t trust the Duke. No matter how I think about it, I just can’t understand why you has joined our side.”
“Mother, Duke Heinrich has shown disdain for the original monarchy. He has joined us as an ally.”
“As His Majesty the King says. Once the situation is resolved, I intend to return to where I belong.”
Mikhail affirmed Adrian’s words. However, Lady Luther, who had been listening quietly, narrowed her eyes.
“That might be difficult. I believe the Duke wants her close by to ensure his peace of mind. If he ever changes his mind and falls for the girl, it might pose a problem.”
“I’ve stated that I won’t remain in the castle any longer.”
Lady Luther’s brows furrowed at Mikhail’s resolute response. She didn’t avert her gaze, instead pressing her forehead with her fingers.
“Fine. You won’t stay in the castle, as you say. But…”
She paused, then raised her chin with determination.
“Do you have to share your bed with her thrice a week? No, if you really can’t control yourself, it might become troublesome, so… once a week should suffice.”
Ah, I see.
That suspicious old fox.
Mikhail barely suppressed the unease bubbling inside him.

“Why did they suddenly ask me to dress up?”
“I only know that we have somewhere to go. How could a humble servant like me understand what the upper-class desires?”
Emilia stifled a bitter laugh as she looked into the mirror. She looked splendid, like a perfect noblewoman. Her family and those who shared her cause might still be alive in prison.
Her mouth felt dry.
She gazed at her fiery red hair, then turned her attention away.
“You look beautiful.”
“Why the elaborate dress-up and what kind of drama are they planning?”
“Madam, try to see the positives. After all, you’re still alive.”
The servant Leri spat out her words without batting an eye. She probably said it knowing that Emilia couldn’t harm her.
Emilia didn’t react. Leri wasn’t entirely wrong, but it didn’t matter if she died. She woke up every morning with a sense of humiliation and guilt.
This girl wouldn’t understand that feeling.
“Others haven’t died either.”
She had spared their lives. So, they were merely imprisoned, not dead.
“…Uh, is that so? I really didn’t know.”
Emilia’s eyebrows twitched at Leri’s lukewarm response. She immediately grabbed Leri’s arm.
“Is that really all you know?”
“No, no! I just thought with so many people dying, it would be difficult for the opposing factions to spare their lives, that’s all!”
“Is that really it?”
Leri hurriedly nodded. Tears welled up in her brown eyes, perhaps due to the sudden turn of events.
