“I need to rest in my room for a bit.”
“Or perhaps you might enjoy a walk?”
“That doesn’t sound like a bad idea.”
“I’ll prepare for it.”
As Dell went to prepare for the walk, she suddenly remembered her errand and quickly turned back.
“Oh, and the maid who cleaned your room asked me to give you this.”
Emilia took the item Dell handed her, and her face turned pale at the sight of the white pills in the envelope.
“I completely forgot about the contraceptive pills.”
She had not taken the dagger from under her pillow that day, which was a mistake, but she had believed the pills hidden under the bed would remain undiscovered.
“Did they say anything else?”
“No, just that they found it on the floor. Madam, please let me know if you feel unwell.”
“No, I’m fine. I just keep it as an emergency remedy for occasional headaches.”
“….Please be sure to tell me if you’re feeling unwell.”
“I will.”
Emilia quickly put the pills in the drawer.
‘If they saw the pills, they’d know what they were.’
She couldn’t understand why the pills had been returned to her. He had told her to keep them hidden. If the maid had found them, she would have reported it to him.
Yet the pills were back in her possession.
‘What could he be thinking?’
Feeling stifled, she decided that a walk might help clear her mind.
“I need to go for a walk. I feel so confined.”
Emilia put on her gloves and took her parasol.
Tomorrow, regardless of how others might feel, she would become Duchess Heinrich.
‘It’s actually a relief. The attention on me will shift to Dahlia.’
She had no desire to be the star of a loveless wedding. She could already see the sensational headlines in the newspapers.
Emilia left her room and went downstairs, passing the busy servants on her way out of the estate. She aimed to head towards Epfora Park after passing through the beautiful gardens of the mansion.
However, the guard at the main gate stopped her.
“I’m sorry, but you cannot leave the mansion today.”
“….Why not? I only intended to go for a walk in Epfora Park.”
“The Duke has ordered it. If you wish to take a walk, please use the garden.”
“Do you think I’m going to run away?”
“I’m merely following the Duke’s orders.”
“Step aside.”
“I’m sorry, I can’t do that.”
The guard remained firm. Emilia gripped her parasol tightly and turned around.
But she was stopped by someone standing right behind her. She saw the polished black leather shoes and the neatly pressed trousers.
As she looked up the long legs, she saw a hand wearing a black glove holding a cane and smelled a subtle forest scent.
“…What brings you out here?”
Even without looking up, she could guess who it was. A large shadow was cast over her head. Emilia slowly raised her head.
At that moment, a hat was placed firmly on her head. She looked puzzled.
“You said you were going for a walk.”
“…But you prevented me from doing even that.”
“That’s why I’m here. Weren’t you going to come and complain to me anyway?”
Surely he doesn’t intend to join her for a walk.
Emilia’s eyes quickly scanned his outfit. He was dressed in a neat suit with a waistcoat. He casually took the parasol from her hand and opened it.
“Are you planning to accompany me?”
She was curious about his reasons. It seemed unlikely that he was worried she might run away and decided to come himself. Her red hair was too noticeable to hide; anyone who saw her would remember and talk about where she went.
Mikhail, holding the parasol, walked towards the main gate. The guard immediately opened it.
Emilia let out a sarcastic laugh at the guard’s vastly different attitude.
“It shouldn’t be a problem. Unless you plan to run away. Well, are you coming?”
He motioned with his head for her to follow. Emilia stood still, thinking.
She wanted to clear her mind alone and didn’t want to be with the cause of her confusion. But objectively, this was an opportunity presented to her.
An opportunity to win his favor, to go on dates and converse like other lovers, exchanging feelings. Since she had decided to win his heart, she shouldn’t miss this chance.
Emilia walked up to him and stood by his side.
“If I were to leave the mansion and run away now, the newspapers would report every detail about where I went and how far I got by the next day. So, you don’t have to worry about me running away, do you?”
“You seem more conscious of others’ opinions than I thought.”
“After all, I’m marrying under the auspices of the royal family and the trust of the king. Even just going out for a walk, everyone will glance at me.”
Mikhail smirked. His eyes remained arrogant, and his words were still rude.
“That’s just your vanity.”
“Perhaps.”
Emilia smiled, her eyes closing slightly. She didn’t confront him but shrugged and took a step forward.
