“The red eyes belong to Duke Heinrich as well, don’t they?”
“That’s right. The golden hair too. They keep reminding me of those I’d rather forget.”
She felt the same way. But she couldn’t admit to Adrian that she too had doubts.
“Your Majesty, that’s a dangerous statement.”
Adrian loosened his chin with a smile and then whispered to her.
“Do you really think it was just a maid who slashed your door that day?”
“I know it wasn’t done by a maid.”
Emilia tried to understand Mikhail’s intentions. Even at the time, she hadn’t believed it was Millina’s doing. But she couldn’t guess who was behind it.
“But now, I think I might understand.”
Emilia clenched her fists.
The murderous intent, the hostility, and the person who could reach her door without interference from others at the Duke’s estate.
Dahlia.
If it were her, it would be plausible. But if today hadn’t happened, Emilia would never have imagined it.
She would never have known Dahlia harbored such hatred towards her.
There were two people within the estate who wanted her dead: one was her husband, and the other was a beloved family member of the Duke.
‘Are there only two?’
Wouldn’t those who serve him as their master share the same sentiment?
A single word from the Duke could put her life in danger.
Emilia was merely a presence in the Duke’s household.
But was it really true that someone intended to kill her?
She hadn’t done anything deserving of such hatred. She hadn’t wronged Dahlia or the Duke to that extent.
If anyone deserved to die, it should be the Duke, who ruthlessly killed everyone except her parents and led a rebellion to place the unworthy Adrian on the throne.
But she……
She wanted to believe it wasn’t true, but the thought clung to her, dragging her down.
It felt like falling endlessly into an abyss. Everything she had believed in was collapsing.
She denied it, but inside her, it had already shattered into pieces. It would eventually be left empty.
“Oh dear, it seems I’ve spoken out of turn.”
“It’s fine. It was just an accident.”
“An accident… Dahlia, was it? I have a feeling I know what illness she might have.”
“It would be better to return to the Duke’s estate for treatment. Sir Byne, let’s go back.”
“Shouldn’t you receive treatment first? The bleeding is severe.”
“I won’t die from this. So it’s better to return.”
Adrian nodded as if he expected this response.
“I’m curious. Why do you think it wasn’t the maid’s doing?”
Adrian blocked Emilia’s path. She had no choice but to speak.
“I didn’t hear everything clearly, but a maid wouldn’t have such skill with a blade. And I didn’t feel any murderous intent strong enough to kill me.”
“So you know who was behind it?”
“Yes.”
Emilia took a step back and looked Adrian squarely in the eyes.
He was trying to deceive her.
“The King’s shadow. Isn’t that sufficient?”
“Haha. You think it’s me. Surely you know how much I long for you, Duchess.”
She was well aware of the desire in his eyes.
“By the way, how did Your Majesty know someone had slashed my door?”
“Do you think there’s anything that happens in the kingdom that I don’t know about?”
“It seems there are things you don’t know. For instance, you didn’t even know about Dahlia’s existence. I also wonder how much you know about the Duke.”
“Duke Heinrich is a man of many secrets.”
Nobles attending the ball began to head outside to their carriages. Emilia stood there, rooted to the spot.
“I’m more interested in you than him.”
Emilia’s face showed disdain.
“… Duke?”
Emilia turned her head at Adrian’s words.
Mikhail approached her with an irritated voice.
“Come here.”
Emilia just stood and watched him. Why had he returned now, after walking away so coldly?
As if reading her expression, he brushed his hair back and walked up to her.
She pulled her uninjured arm away, increasing the distance between herself and Adrian.
“Why… did you come back?”
“Don’t ask, I don’t understand it myself.”
“And Miss?”
“Boestin took her back to the mansion.”
“I thought you would go with them.”
“I should have.”
But he returned.
His green eyes shimmered like summer foliage catching the sunlight.
“I’ll handle the treatment at the Duke’s estate. I’ll come by later to discuss what happened.”
Without waiting for a response, he grabbed Emilia’s hand and pulled her along.
In that instant, everything that had been collapsing within her came to a halt.
