Emilia was a knight, but she had never drawn her sword to kill anyone. The kingdom had always been peaceful, so she never thought she might have to kill someone herself.
“Being pitied doesn’t grant immunity.”
“True. But the child’s actions can’t be blamed entirely on her, especially after losing her parents suddenly.”
“…I suppose so.”
It sounded almost as if he was suggesting not to hate Dahlia.
* * *
Dahlia anxiously looked out the window.
“Dahlia, first come over and have some tea.”
“I don’t understand why you’re angry with me.”
“Do you remember what you did?”
“…No. When I came to, everything was in chaos. You know I wouldn’t do such things!”
Dahlia was confused. No one had ever told her about the condition she suffered from.
She couldn’t remember things clearly. Boestin took Dahlia’s hand and pulled her towards the bed.
“Rest. You need to rest.”
“I’m worried about Brother.”
“What’s making you so anxious?”
“…”
She felt a fear of being abandoned. The way she had seen her brother today, it seemed he would never abandon that woman.
“It’s a change of heart… if not, he wouldn’t treat me this way.”
“Dahlia, Mikhail won’t abandon you. He has always been by your side, like a true brother.”
Boestin found Dahlia’s anxiety strange. Mikhail had sacrificed his own happiness, freedom, and everything to stay by Dahlia’s side.
At least that was the Mikhail that Boestin had known.
From the moment she first saw him at the academy to the present, after losing contact and reconnecting, Mikhail had always been with Dahlia.
“It’s said that when one of the siblings who were close get married, it feels like they’re taken away. You rely too much on Mikhail. Dahlia, you’re an adult now.”
He couldn’t stay by her side forever. There would come a day when Dahlia would have to leave his care and establish her own family.
“Mikhail isn’t yours alone. He can build his own family and direct the affection he has poured into you towards someone else.”
“No! I hate that woman more than anything! It can’t happen!”
Dahlia shouted. She glared at Boestin, her tears continuing to fall as she spoke.
“Of course, you wouldn’t understand. Only my brother can understand me. And I’m the only one who can understand him. I don’t need anyone else. So, get out of my room.”
She pointed towards the door, her tears falling freely.
“Everyone is like that. They act like they’re entitled to something from me just because I show a little weakness. It makes me want to vomit.”
“Dahlia, how can you talk like that…!”
“Shut up, Boestin.”
Her gaze became cold, and the tearful child was replaced by a person with a frozen expression, staring at Boestin without emotion.
“You’re disappointed because my brother is getting married? You did nice things for me because you liked him, but now what? My brother doesn’t know how you feel.”
Boestin stood up, brushing off her dress and facing Dahlia.
“I’m sorry, but I liked you, not Mikhail. I liked you as my little sister.”
“…Don’t lie.”
“Right. I understand. Most of the people who approached you had their own motives. But not everyone is the same.”
Boestin walked past Dahlia.
“If you don’t want to be left alone, get a grip on yourself now, Dahlia. Everyone has painful experiences that are hard to share. Thinking you are the most sorrowful and miserable in the world is arrogance.”
She then opened the door and left.
Outside, people who had rushed to the scene after hearing Dahlia’s distressed cries were waiting.
“Keep a close watch. I’ve given her medicine in the tea, but she looks dangerous.”
Boestin glanced back at the closed door.
She knew there was a strong bond between the two that couldn’t be easily broken. But it seemed Mikhail had shattered that bond this time.
“I guess I shouldn’t have come.”
Boestin felt as though she had been caught up in something unnecessary.
“Where is the guest room?”
“Miss Boestin, I’ll guide you.”
At Kartho’s words, Boestin followed him, stopping in front of the door.
“Seems like it won’t work out. I’ll head to the lodging I’ve arranged for myself.”
“It’s quite late.”
“If you’re concerned, could you have a knight escort me to my lodgings?”
“That’s fine, but are you really not staying at the mansion?”
“Yes, I don’t want to get caught up in unnecessary gossip. But please relay my message to Mikhail.”
“Certainly, I’ll pass on your message.”
Boestin took a deep breath and said,
“Tell him this: ‘Hey, you bastard, with this, the debt I owed is settled, so send me the contract for the investment!’ …That should be the message.”
Kartho blinked in surprise. Boestin left the mansion without a second thought and climbed into the carriage.
