“I was completely fooled by that! Oh, has that blockhead finally opened his eyes to beauty now that he’s in love? …But, as expected, he hasn’t changed at all.”
As she said, there wasn’t a noble estate without at least one properly planted flower.
“Do you think planting flowers here would change the atmosphere?”
“Maybe. It seems like someone has already noticed a change.”
“…Are you referring to the Duke?”
Emilia asked with disbelief. Boestin thought of Mikhail’s shocked expression when he saw Emilia smiling at her.
“Hm, doesn’t Madam feel it more?”
“I can’t figure him out. I don’t know what he’s thinking or what feelings he has.”
“Yet you look like you can see right through him. That’s why I called him insufferable.”
Boestin chewed on a cookie, narrowing her eyes slightly.
‘This is turning out to be quite entertaining. I don’t want to go back to Valoh now.’
She had initially sought separate accommodations because she thought this place would be bleak, but now she felt drawn back to the Duke’s estate.
“Madam, I actually have a favor to ask.”
“What kind of favor? I can’t promise that I can fulfill many requests.”
Her pretty face quickly turned troubled.
“It’s not a difficult request.”
Boestin wiped her mouth with a napkin and rinsed it with tea. The fragrant tea refreshed her senses.
“My accommodation’s water pipes burst.”
“That must be very inconvenient. Do you know how soon it will be repaired?”
“They say it will take at least a month… It’s the social season, and since it’s the capital, finding a place to stay isn’t easy.”
“Then how can I help? I’d like to offer even a small assistance.”
“If you could allow me to stay here as a guest of the Duke’s residence, I’d be more than grateful. It would also give me more opportunities to chat with you before I return to Valoh…”
She hesitated.
It was undoubtedly because of Mikhail.
“Don’t worry about the Duke. Do you think he would kick out the only academy classmate he’s been in contact with?”
Use your connections when it’s unfavorable.
Boestin suddenly shifted their relationship from debtor and creditor to classmates.
She was someone who handled situations adeptly.
* * *
It had been a while since Emilia had eaten with an outsider.
Maybe that’s why the food tasted particularly delicious today.
It wasn’t often that she had a meal with Mikhail, but she never expected to have lunch with a guest. Sharing a meal with someone who was friendly made her feel as if she had made a friend.
The tender duck b****t was perfectly complemented by the soft orange dressing. The delicate leafy greens and grilled mushrooms added to the symphony of flavors, their juices swirling in her mouth. The accompanying dishes were harmonious as well.
The problem, however, lay in the atmosphere.
Every time Mikhail and Boestin’s eyes met, Emilia felt her heart sink.
‘Let’s not focus on that.’
That would be for the best. If they continued to eat together like this, she felt like she might choke.
Unable to hold back any longer, Emilia suddenly asked Mikhail, “What exactly is the problem here?”
“I never said there was a problem.”
“Looking at the two of you, it seems like there are plenty of problems.”
Emilia sighed as she spoke. At her response, Boestin seized the moment to chime in.
“Mikhail does have his share of problems. He should really fix that sharp glare he’s directing at a guest during mealtime.”
“If the guest wasn’t so unwelcome, they should take a hint and leave.”
“Why should I be unwelcome? Look at the delicious food prepared for me by Madam.”
Boestin snickered, clearly trying to provoke him.
Emilia felt that if she stayed there any longer, she would end up caught in their bickering all day. Finally, she wiped her mouth with a napkin and said, “If you two are going to fight during the meal, I’ll excuse myself.”
“Don’t do that. Just sit down. We won’t fight.”
Boestin urgently pulled Emilia back into her seat. Then, shooting Mikhail a pointed look, she added, “You should be kind to your friend. If you have no friends and I’m gone too, then you’ll really have no one.”
“I still don’t understand why you act like my friend.”
“You’re being unreasonable.”
Boestin popped a piece of duck into her mouth, narrowing her eyes slightly.
The two continued to bicker afterward.
“If you drive me away, it will only make things difficult for Madam. No one would enjoy that. How foolish.”
“Lady Evelyn, I’d appreciate it if you’d choose your words more carefully.”
“Of course, of course. But since I’m just stating facts, you should take heed. It’s foolish to undermine your Madam’s reputation.”
“…Why are you even a guest of Emilia’s in the first place?”
“That’s because she granted me permission. We decided to be friends starting today.”
Emilia choked on her food, having suddenly been dragged into their argument.
After taking a sip of water, she looked at Boestin.
‘Were we friends? When did that happen?’
She had said she would help, but they hadn’t really discussed anything in detail.
“…That’s right.”
Emilia reluctantly nodded.
