“Your Majesty, everyone is only watching for your cues.”
“Yes, they’re just watching, not out of fear.”
Adrian glared at Mikhail.
“It feels as though someone else is sitting in my place. Doesn’t it?”
“T-That’s an excessive remark.”
The head of the council said, his face turning pale as he bowed his head.
“His words are correct, Your Majesty. I am ashamed to have caused trouble to the royal family. However, the child’s poor health led to their fearful actions. Please, forgive us with kindness.”
Mikhail lowered his head towards Adrian, his expression showing no sign of guilt.
“The one actually sitting in that seat is Your Majesty, isn’t it? The one remembered by all is the person sitting there, not the one looking up at the seat.”
“…The Duke never fails to amaze. With that tongue of yours, you could save the country.”
“If it’s possible to save the country without using force, then that too is a skill, isn’t it?”
He didn’t back down with a single word. Adrian felt the urge to draw his sword from his waist and charge at him right then.
What made him so special that he continually reduced Adrian to this miserable state?
“If Your Majesty shows mercy, I too will become a loyal subject.”
His was a conditional loyalty.
It was loyalty that could never be called true.
❖ ❖ ❖
The carriage stopped in front of the Loren estate, waiting for the door to open.
Though under the King’s watch, there was no reason Emilia couldn’t enter.
She had already transitioned from being a lady of the Loren family to Duchess Heinrich through their marriage.
Emilia used this fact to speak to the gatekeeper.
“I have come as Duchess Heinrich. Open the door.”
“…Please wait a moment.”
The gatekeeper, looking troubled, hurried inside the mansion.
‘They aren’t planning to tire me out with a delay, hoping I’ll leave, are they?’
It was entirely possible. They might even come up with some absurd excuse about her parents being away.
Emilia was anxious, but she didn’t show it.
She sat calmly in the carriage, waiting for the door to open.
“You’re not worried, are you?”
“Of course, I am. But the door will open eventually.”
With Boestin here, there was no way she could turn back now.
‘It’s taking longer than I thought.’
Emilia smiled slightly, gazing out the window.
After what seemed like a delay, the main gate finally opened.
A soft sigh escaped her lips.
As the golden iron gates opened, the wheels of the carriage began to roll forward.
On the day history changed, Emilia had been at the castle.
Emilia did not know what had happened at the Loren estate on that brutal day.
And so, she was a little afraid. She feared that the image she remembered might be gone, and that the dreadful traces of that day might still be scattered around, stirring up painful memories.
From the moment the carriage entered through the main gate, Emilia kept her gaze fixed on Boestin, who was sitting across from her, rather than looking out the window.
On the other hand, Boestin was staring intently out the window. Her eyes, as clear as the bright sky, were fixed on the garden.
The carriage came to a stop.
Emilia took a small breath, waiting. As soon as the door opened, Boestin got out first.
Emilia didn’t follow immediately but stayed still, watching Boestin’s reaction.
Boestin turned her head from side to side, and then she smiled brightly when she saw Emilia inside the carriage.
Only then did a sense of relief settle in Emilia’s heart. A heavy sigh of relief escaped her lips.
“My, my! The entrance is completely different!”
At Boestin’s excited voice, Emilia’s steps lightened as she got out of the carriage.
As they slowly examined the entrance, emotions began to overwhelm Emilia.
The bright red roses of the Loren estate were blooming vividly. However, the few roses that stood out, looking fragile, brought a tightness to her chest.
The garden, once filled with an overwhelming number of roses, was no longer visible. Only a handful of buds, barely open, had managed to survive, blooming as though to celebrate their survival.
Even so, the roses, true to the Loren family, were glowing with their colors, bathed in the hot sunlight.
“I’ve never seen such beautiful roses.”
“Miss Boestin, I’m sorry.”
“Huh? Why are you apologizing? You don’t have to apologize to me. I’d be happy with just one flower.”
She gently picked a single flower, pulling it towards her to inhale its fragrance.
“This rich rose scent is something you can’t find anywhere else. Thank you.”
“I’m glad you like it. Before we return to the Duke’s mansion, I’ll cut a few and give them to you as a gift.”
“Oh, would that be all right? Just seeing them is enough for me, but with such a scent, I’d love to drop the petals in hot water and enjoy a bath. It would feel like I’m a single flower blooming in the garden.”
Thankfully, Boestin seemed pleased. Whether it was just a considerate remark or not, Emilia appreciated it.
“You can go to the drawing room and have some tea while I enjoy the rose scent. Could you let me know when you’re done with your business, Madam?”
“…Miss Boestin.”
“Please, hurry. We don’t have much time.”
Boestin, savoring the scent of the roses, took in the garden.
Emilia glanced at her and then made her way into the mansion.
“I’ve come to see my parents. There’s a guest from abroad who wants to see the roses of the Loren estate, so would you mind cutting a few? She’s waiting in the garden.”
“…Understood. They’re in the drawing room.”
Emilia nodded at the words of the unfamiliar man, who had introduced himself as the butler.
