But still, she felt she had to apologize to him.
‘What should I say? How do I even start?’
Everything was a mess, and she couldn’t even tell where it all went wrong. She wasn’t sure if apologizing to him was even the right thing to do.
Lost in thought, Emilia suddenly noticed a box on the desk.
It was wrapped up, and it looked like a gift someone had sent her.
[I have sent you a gift. I hope you like it.]
Emilia decided to ask Dell about it. But then, a thought crossed her mind, and she stopped herself from reaching for the string to untie the box.
‘It must be from my mother.’
The contents of the letter her mother had sent her recently flashed in her mind.
Without hesitation, Emilia walked over to the desk. She slowly untied the ribbon on the box with both hands.
As she lifted the lid, delicate lace gloves, carefully woven, were inside.
Just as she was about to gently pick up the gloves, the door suddenly flew open.
The door swung wide without a knock, and Emilia turned toward it, scrunching her face in surprise.
“…Your Grace.”
Mikhail stood there, slightly out of breath. His gaze quickly shifted to the box in front of her.
Instinctively, she moved to cover it.
“Who is the gift from?”
“…”
Emilia hesitated. Should she say it was from her mother?
It was hard to bring up her parents, especially since he knew the truth now. She couldn’t just pretend to be unaware, not after everything.
“I’m asking you.”
He approached her swiftly and grabbed her hand.
“…It’s a gift from my mother.”
“Are you sure?”
“…Yes. As far as I know, I’m sure.”
“You’re telling me you’re certain it’s from your mother, just because of a letter you received a few days ago?”
Emilia’s gaze wavered.
‘He already knows about the letter.’
She bit her lip and tried to pull her hand away from his grasp.
“I don’t understand why you’re acting like this. My mother just said it was a wedding gift.”
“Exactly.”
Mikhail sneered.
“So, you think your parents, who know everything, are blessing our marriage.”
“…That’s!”
He seemed angry now, but the fury was entirely directed at her.
“How naive and fearless you are. You still haven’t learned how to doubt people. Do you think everyone around you is good?”
The coldness in his voice made Emilia shudder.
As she gazed into his red eyes, her own eyes widened in shock. Now, the golden waves in his irises were clearly visible.
Why hadn’t she noticed it until now?
Once again, the truth pressed in on her.
In the end, Emilia couldn’t meet his gaze any longer and turned her head away.
“I don’t understand what you mean. Didn’t you already know everything? I received a letter from my mother, so I assumed the gift was from her. It seems like you already know the contents of the letter, though.”
Emilia twisted her hand again, trying to free her wrist. However, it was difficult since it was held high by him.
“It hurts.”
“Why? Don’t you want to ask if this kind of violence comes from Bayern blood?”
“…”
“You went to Loren’s estate, yet you don’t even know your mother’s condition. How pathetic.”
“What do you mean by that?”
“This makes it meaningless to send you to the Duke’s estate. The reason women and those in power began wearing gloves is simple.”
Mikhail rubbed the inside of her wrist with his thumb.
“It was to avoid death. At the very least, to prevent dying foolishly without understanding why.”
He moved his hand up her wrist, inserting his fingers between hers.
“But right now, your hand is bare, and here on the desk is a gift your mother supposedly sent.”
“My mother would never do such a thing.”
“Really? You think so?”
“…”
Emilia couldn’t answer immediately. But the mother she knew would never be so cruel as to kill her own daughter.
“Yes, I believe so.”
“Then you need to confirm your faith.”
Mikhail spoke toward the door.
“Let her in.”
The door opened, and Dell, trembling in fear, entered the room.
“Ma-Madam…”
She looked terrified, her jaw shaking with the sound of her teeth chattering. Emilia shouted at Mikhail.
“What are you trying to do? Dell has done nothing wrong!”
“Is that so? Failing to serve your master is a crime. And serving your master was this child’s duty.”
“Your Grace!”
Mikhail pulled her hand, forcing her away from the desk.
“Most gloves given as gifts are tightly fitted. They are meant to protect hands that might touch something dirty or contaminated.”
But the gloves she had received were delicate lace gloves.
“You believe your mother sent these, and you think there’s nothing wrong with it.”
“…What…?”
Emilia’s eyes, filled with anxiety, turned toward him. He tilted his head toward Dell, who was still trembling in fear.
“Come here and take out the gloves.”
Del approached, tears falling from his eyes. Slowly, she reached toward the gift box on the desk.
Emilia became extremely uneasy.
Could she really believe that her mother had sent this gift?
