“Then I’ll go to the flower market with Dell today.”
Mikhail furrowed his brow slightly before slowly nodding in agreement.
“Oh, flower market? May I join you?”
“Miss Leah, you’re so kind. But I’d like to arrange the garden according to my own taste. It’s better if we go together next time.”
At Emilia’s refusal, Leah just smiled, not continuing the conversation.
“Then I’ll go back first to get ready to head into town. Miss Leah, enjoy your conversation with His Grace before you leave.”
“Madam! Are you sure you don’t want to stay and talk?”
She urgently grabbed Emilia.
“Yes, it’s fine.”
Emilia’s indifferent tone made Leah’s face twist in frustration. In truth, she wasn’t bothered at all.
The problem was something else entirely. The expression on Mikhail’s face, who had been listening quietly, was not good.
❖ ❖ ❖
Emilia finished her meal lightly and climbed into the carriage.
Dell, seemingly still in disbelief that they were heading into town, looked out the window excitedly.
“Is it really that great?”
“Of course! It’s my first time going to the flower market. As you know, there aren’t any flowers at the Duke’s estate.”
Dell had a sulky expression for a moment but awkwardly smiled as if realizing her mistake.
“But I like the Duke’s estate just the way it is.”
“Everyone seems to have gotten used to it.”
“Well, when I stare at the garden, I feel like my eyes get clearer.”
“It must be because of the green. It’s a fresh, summer garden.”
“Exactly! But with flowers, it would be even more beautiful.”
“Speaking of which, Dell, is there a clinic in town?”
“A clinic? The Duke’s private doctor is already here, why would we need a clinic in town…?”
Dell’s words trailed off.
After a moment, her eyes grew wide, and she covered her mouth with her hand.
“Gasp!”
“I’m not sure, but you know how I haven’t been feeling well lately.”
“Now that I think about it, you’ve been sleeping a lot. Most importantly, you haven’t had your period. You’ve been feeling nauseous often, and even vomiting… with all that, it seems…”
“Dell.”
“…There must be a reason, right?”
“Yes, you’re right.”
Dell sighed. Emilia also felt guilty asking her for help, but Dell was the only person she could trust at the Duke’s estate.
“You stand out too much, Madam. Even if people were looking for you, it would be impossible to get a secret check-up.”
“…I see.”
All the effort of coming into town seemed pointless. Would it have been different if she didn’t have red hair?
“Madam, do you wish you’re not pregnant?”
“I’m not pregnant.”
Emilia decided to tell Del about the medication.
“I’ve been taking contraceptives. So, I’m pretty sure I’m not pregnant.”
“…You’ve been taking contraceptives? How did you get them?”
“The maid gave them to you, remember? I kept them after getting them from Miss Dahlia.”
Del recalled the white envelope. Her face went pale in an instant.
“If, if His Grace finds out about this…”
“That won’t happen. If he had known from the start, it would be different, but I’ve already taken the pills, so there’s no evidence.”
Truth be told, Dell didn’t know, but he already suspected she had taken the contraceptives.
The naive Dell believed Emilia’s words and said with a worried expression,
“Then it might just be that you’re not pregnant, but rather not feeling well.”
Although she felt guilty, Emilia couldn’t speak the truth. She gave a faint smile and shrugged.
“Maybe that would be better.”
If he thought she might die, he might pity her enough to let her go.
‘Now, I have to keep it hidden.’
Emilia gently placed her hand over her stomach. Even if she was carrying his child, she had no intention of telling him.
❖ ❖ ❖
Mikhail couldn’t stop thinking about Emilia’s face.
Emilia looked at him and Lady Chevron with an indifferent expression, and her tone—almost as if she didn’t care—strangely irked him.
“Your Grace? Are you listening?”
Was it fate that he met this woman so inconveniently this morning?
Mikhail had originally been scheduled to meet with Count Chevron, but when he arrived, it was Lady Chevron who was there instead of him.
He tried to get into the carriage and leave without her.
“If you’re going to be like this, the Duchess will be troubled.”
Leah wrapped her arms around her stomach and shivered.
“Please let me in the carriage. Otherwise, I’ll start screaming right here.”
“Hah.”
Mikhail’s anger simmered. Under normal circumstances, he would have just turned and left immediately.
However, the timing and location weren’t ideal. It was a situation where they could easily attract attention, and Leah, with her eyes brimming with tears, looked like she was about to start shouting at any moment.
The way she hugged her stomach seemed ominous, like she was about to do something outrageous.
In the end, Mikhail had no choice but to let her into the carriage.
As they rode, she didn’t avoid his gaze, instead looking at him directly.
Later, they arrived at the Duke’s estate, where Mikhail ran into Emilia, and thus, he and Leah ended up having tea together.
