“I know.. There’s hardly anyone better to watch you than Duke Heinrich.”
“Don’t patronize me any longer. Your Majesty has plenty of women at your disposal, doesn’t you? Why me of all people…!”
Why try to disgrace a father who never gave in until the end?
Emilia pushed Adrian away with force. As he lowered his head, burying his face in her chest, and took a breath, she felt a shiver run through her body as if thorns were pricking her all over.
“Your Majesty!”
Emilia reached into her skirt. She intended to retrieve the small dagger hidden on her thigh. If she were to stab him to death here, not only her father, who was in prison, but the entire family would be annihilated. Emilia struggled.
Yet, she barely managed to steady her trembling hand, concluding that instead of demeaning herself, she would kill this beast and die herself.
Emilia gripped the dagger tightly. Facing Adrian, completely consumed by desire, she pleaded,
“P-please stop.”
If he stopped here, she could still turn back. She tightly shut her eyes.
“What if I don’t want to? You must not be expecting your husband to come to your rescue, right? You know, the Duke doesn’t particularly fancy you either.”
“Huuk.”
Finally, she drew the dagger and aimed it at Adrian’s throat.
“Ugh!”
Adrian, seemingly dumbfounded by her audacious act of pointing the blade at his throat, laughed mockingly.
“Hehehe.”
Emilia quickly backed away, pulling the dagger out of his neck and aiming it at him with a tight grip, her hand trembling but not releasing the blade.
Her green eyes glinted with determination, refusing to back down. Adrian wiped the smile off his face and rose from his seat.
“Your Majesty!”
Hidden figures revealed themselves. Emilia’s gaze suddenly shifted, and then she pointed the blade at her own throat.
“I would be faster than them, Your Majesty. I told you I have nothing to lose.”
“You caught me off guard. I didn’t expect you to hold the blade to your own throat.”
“After harming Your Majesty, it wouldn’t matter whether I die alone or at the hands of someone else, would it?”
“That’s true. If you die, I’ll be the only one at a loss.”
It seemed like he still desired something from her. If not, there must be a reason he couldn’t kill her.
‘Is he wary of Duke Heinrich’s reaction?’
Although the exact terms between the two remained unclear, one thing was certain. The king couldn’t kill her.
“Admittedly, I went too far this time. How about putting the dagger down now? It’s not good for either of us to cause harm to each other.”
At the king’s words, Emilia let out a bitter laugh. Was an apology enough to make amends?
No matter how much of a king he was, trying to strip a woman who had become someone’s wife was not justifiable. She couldn’t openly criticize him, but there would be whispers behind his back.
Perhaps the nobles would become more cautious even about allowing their wives and daughters to enter the palace, to protect them.
“Whether you’re watching the nobles or the Duke, it works out well for me. I hope such incidents won’t happen again in the future, Your Majesty.”
Adrian raised both hands and shrugged. Then he gestured towards the knights who had drawn their swords towards Emilia, and they sheathed their weapons and stepped back.
“I’ll consider your departure now as a courtesy. But, Lady Heinrich, if you hadn’t been careful, you would have aimed your sword at your pristine neck a long time ago. Wouldn’t that have been heartbreaking? Many would be saddened if even a slight injury marred your beautiful body.”
Adrian said, taking a sip of his drink.
“So next time, think before drawing your blade. Remember to use your intelligence and make better choices.”
Emilia spread her skirts on either side with her hand tightly clutching the dagger, then bowed and left the Aether Hall without a word.
Transparent tears quickly welled in her eyes, which were glaringly red from suppressed emotions. She bit her lip to keep herself from crying. Maintaining an appearance of calm as if nothing had happened, struggling to control her emotions. However, her bloodshot eyes and trembling body clearly betrayed that something had indeed happened to her.
As she turned the corner, a sigh of relief escaped her lips. She lowered her head, breathing heavily and grinding her teeth. Soon, she came face to face with Mikhail, who was wearing an intrigued expression.
“So the rumors weren’t baseless after all.”
