“It doesn’t seem like I ever gave you the authority to punish the maids.”
“But I can’t just stand by and watch a cheeky maid, can I?”
There was no hint of remorse in Dahlia’s demeanor. Instead, she narrowed her eyes at the trembling Leri.
“That girl dared to stand in my way. Brother, there’s no one I can’t meet. Especially if she’s your wife.”
“You don’t need to meet her.”
Emilia’s head turned at Mikhail’s words. Although she seemed to have much to say, she ultimately kept her lips sealed.
‘She understands without me saying anything.’
It was an intrusion in the midst whilst Emilia was trying to wash and rest.
Despite the embarrassment of sitting in light clothing, her expression remained unchanged.
“You’re being too harsh on your wife. I’ll continue to see her in the mansion. She’s practically family to me, how can I not even greet her?”
“That woman will never be my family. So just leave it at that.”
“Brother is too much to blatantly ignore someone in front of their face. It’ll hurt my new sister-in-law.”
Dahlia grabbed Emilia’s arm and smiled.
“Dahlia, I clearly told you that there won’t be any meetings.”
“I don’t like it. I’ve always been curious.”
What kind of face she had. How she grew up. Whether she radiated light.
Whether she suffered like me.
Dahlia murmured softly. Emilia leaned toward her to concentrate on her words.
“…My face?”
“Hehe. Don’t we all wonder? What kind of person will become the Lady of the house? I was a little surprised because she’s not what I imagined.”
Mikhail noticed the hint of anger glimmering in Dahlia’s eyes and let out a sigh.
“I, too, imagine my ideal husband to be quite different from the Duke. What about you, Miss? What kind of person did you envision?”
“Hmm, but now it seems somewhat similar.”
Dahlia smiled brightly, alternating her gaze between Emilia and Mikhail.
“Brother must be quite content alone. It’s fortunate you don’t seem to get along too well.”
“…Pardon?”
“I don’t mean to wish Brother unhappiness. Please don’t misunderstand.”
Emilia looked puzzled at her words.
“Ellyn.”
Mikhail called the maid with a disgruntled expression. When she responded, he gestured towards Leri, who was weeping and sniffling.
“Take this child to be treated. And ensure she receives education so that such incidents do not happen again.”
“Of course. A head lady-in-waiting in your position should do her duty properly, right?”
Dahlia nodded and leaned her head on Emilia’s shoulder.
“And bring a new maid to attend to sister-in-law.”
Ellyn looked at Mikhail. He lightly nodded as if agreeing with Dahlia’s suggestion.
“Understood. I will bring one soon. I will take my leave for now.”
Ellyn promptly supported Leri and left.
Mikhail looked at Dahlia, who was still clinging to Emilia.
“It’s getting late, so go back to the guest house. I’ll overlook today’s events, but remember, this is Heinrich’s residence. If you continue to act as you please, you’ll be sent away, understand?”
“Brother!”
At the mention of being sent away, Dahlia jumped up. She stood up, wide-eyed, and stared at him intently.
“You’ll just send me away?”
“Just make sure you behave well enough to prevent that. I’m reminding you because it seems like you’ve forgotten where you are.”
Dahlia shuddered at Mikhail’s toneless voice. Then she lowered her head with a defeated expression.
“…I understand. I’ll consult with you next time. I only stepped in because my sister couldn’t discipline her, right?”
“I don’t know why the Duke didn’t allow us to meet, but I understand that this incident was excessive. It’s not right to take it out on the maid.”
Dahlia’s lips trembled. It seemed she felt even more hurt when Emilia didn’t take her side.
“You must be tired. How about you go rest in your room now?”
“…Thank you for your consideration.”
“Not at all.”
Emilia got up from the sofa. She lightly nodded at Dahlia and headed towards the door.
“It seems the bloodline didn’t go anywhere. Seeing it, you two seem alike. Not just in appearance, but in words and actions as well.”
A contemptuous gaze brushed past him. Mikhail shrugged and closed the door.
Alone in the room with Dahlia, he looked at her as she sat on the sofa, gazing back at him.
“It’s not like you’ve really taken a liking to her, right? Were you worried I might kill her?”
“I was more concerned that the opposite might happen.”
