Ellyn immediately sent a new maid. The new maid, Dell, seemed to have heard about Leri’s situation but was very respectful.
“My name is Dell. It is an honor to serve you, madam.”
Emilia smiled faintly. It seemed she could relax for a while.
‘Well, ultimately, it turned out to be a good thing for me’
Emilia thought as she sipped on the warm tea that Dell had brought her.
“Madam, if there’s anything uncomfortable, please let me know.”
“I will do that.”
“The weather is nice today. How about taking a walk?”
Emilia blinked. It was the first time someone had suggested something to her.
While she thought she wasn’t supposed to do anything while trapped here, she felt that going for a walk might be nice.
“There was no order not to go out?”
“No, there was no such order. Except for the annex, you can go anywhere,” Dell replied.
“Then, what is he, I mean, the Duke, doing?”
“He is in the study,” Dell replied.
Well, then we won’t run into each other, Emilia thought, nodding her head and getting up.
“Are you not going to have dinner today either?”.
“I think I’ll have a simple meal in the garden,” Emilia replied.
“Yes, I’ll prepare it right away.”
Emilia put on her hat and left the Duke’s residence. Dell followed with an umbrella.
“Mieina is not here, I see.”
“Yes, she has been assigned elsewhere.”
“I see.”
Emilia thought of Milena with her short hair. There was something impure about her attitude, and Emilia felt uneasy not knowing the reason.
“But why are you looking for Milena?”
“No, she just suddenly came to mind.”
“I heard she’s someone who’s being closely watched even at the Duke’s residence. She’s someone sent by the royal family, it seems.”
“I see.”
The fact that the royal family had placed a maid was intriguing. Emilia couldn’t understand how the relationship between the Duke’s residence and the royal family unfolded.
While a strained relationship between them might benefit Emilia, she still couldn’t fully grasp the dynamics.
As she settled in one part of the garden, she felt the breeze. The Duke’s residence was large, and the garden was spacious as well.
Passing through the rows of trees, she saw a vast expanse of grass. Adjacent to it was a lake. While the mansion was impressive, the garden was awe-inspiring.
A fountain was spraying water in the middle of the lake, and a path led to a domed area that opened into another garden.
‘As spacious as a palace.’
Emilia thought, cutting a piece of Victoria sponge cake with her fork and putting it in her mouth.
As the dense sponge cake moistened her mouth, the rich buttercream blended smoothly. The texture, spreading like a coating on her tongue, was complemented by the subtle sweetness of the strawberry jam.
Washing it down with warm tea, a sense of contentment spread within her. The aroma of Earl Grey, tinged with a slightly bitter taste, lingered on her palate every time she exhaled.
“Madam, an invitation has arrived. Shall I show it to you?”
“I didn’t expect an invitation to come to me. I won’t be able to attend anyway, so I should write a reply and send it.”
“Do you want to go?”
“Lady Dahlia.”
Dahlia, who suddenly appeared, blinked and asked.
Emilia gasped, tightly gripping the teacup. She had nearly spilled hot tea on her.
‘That was close.’
Dell also seemed surprised, bowing her head with widened eyes. It was clear that the Duke had intended to prevent their meeting yesterday. How did Dahlia know Emila was here and how did she manage to come despite that?
“Miss, how did you find out and come here? The Duke doesn’t like you meeting with me.”
“Well, that’s Brother’s wish. It’s not mine. Besides, I’m not someone who follows orders.”
Emilia chuckled at Dahlia’s words. That was true as well. Dahlia, his cousin, was not just anyone beneath him, and if so, neither was Emilia, as the lady of the house.
“You’re right.”
“So, Sister, do as you please. If you want to go, you should. Will you bring the invitation?”
“Yes, of course.”
“Also, me being here is a secret.”
“I understand.”
Dahlia smiled beautifully, pressing her index finger to her lips. The veil still covered her face.
“Isn’t it suffocating?”
“Hmm, this? Well, it’s not too bad. It’s more comfortable than I thought, and isn’t it pretty?”
Dahlia smiled, gently tapping the veil adorned with pearls.
“Yes, it suits you well.”
“When the time comes, it will come off. But for now, it’s not so bad.”
